The Always Family

You know what? We are not even going to talk about the hat. Heres why.

Those who have known me for long and short times are aware of my cynicism. That is never under any doubt. They also know that I have wasted a good part of my life being unhappy. In these years of parting clouds, I have found that joy brings the shedding of conventional sarcasm. Point blank: I have learned how to loosen up.

Skutchie once said to me that family did not require matching genetics. Family, he explained, is made up of the people that you love and love you. They are the people that will be there for you through anything. Family sees no bounds.

This weekend, my family convened to wish me a happy engagement. Its members included aunts and uncles, my parents and grandmother, old friends and new-- from high school through college and co-workers. When I sat on that special bride chair with that silly bow hat, I looked out upon the semi circle of family spread out before me and Skutchies words struck harder than they ever have before.

Thank you to everyone who wished the Almost Husband and Almost Wife well. There is no such thing as an Almost Family. We have that now and always will.

Aww, now you've gone and made me cry. We are all blessed when we have love of family and friends--what you said...I need a tissue. Love the hat.

My dear, I love that all of the family could bring you such joy.

And that they got you to wear that silly hat. Love it.

I think that if you look at it closely, your cynicism is really just "disappointed optimism". You look for the good in the world and, too often in the past, didn't find what you were hoping for. But that hasn't stopped you from continuing the pursuit.

Now you are realizing that the search is worth it. You and Lex will be very happy.

You will wear the silly hat when you return, oh great absent Almost Husband.

You look so happy and adorable. You're keeping the hat for the dress rehearsal, right?

I must say, that is one of the loveliest ribbon bonnets I've seen and your expression is priceless.

Congratulations!

And I was so happy to be there for you Corie Forie! Thanks so much for the invitation. So happy I am for you that your sentimental post and lack of cynicism makes me vomit much less than it normally would!

No worries, I'll be cynical enough for the both of us. That's the kind of friend/family I am.

You're a boy, mofo. Boys aren't invited to bridal showers.

I was happy to be there too. I feel honored to be in that extended family friend ring of folks. I love you and am always inspired by the fact that you found your other peapod.
