Little World, Big Heat

Holy smokes! Summer rode in on that crappy barely 50 degrees and rainy weather that we were having and BAM, it was 90 this weekend. The trees burst open. Barbecues were aflame. Lex and I continued building planters and took the seedlings out to the backyard to test out real weather. On Sunday, that cats went into official wilt-splat mode, generally reserved for mid to late summer. I normally love this weather but discovered suddenly that the pregnant me (even in these early stages, unfortunately), does not deal well with the heat. After standing for most of each day, it feel as though someone was stabbing me repeatedly in the feet. And my knees. Very sad. And I know it gets much, much worse.
One of the best things about nice weather is that the city suddenly wakes up. People emerge from every nook and cranny and all of the sudden you see things that have been hidden all winter. We spent a good amount of time this weekend at home working on the house, though mostly outside, which enabled us to meet neighbors and talk for the first time. It made us feel so much more connected to this new life that we've been carving out.
This afternoon Lex and I stepped out onto our stoop to find a woman and her young daughter walking past. Lex said, "You look really familiar, did you go to Brown?" to which she responded, "yes," and it turned out that they'd known one another many years ago. We all got to talking and realized that she'd worked at a school that I'd worked closely with, and was en route to one of our neighbors to pick up a stroller via a connection made through the Park Slope parents group. Suddenly, Brooklyn felt very small. I love when that happens.
If you can't tell from the above photo, Irving is in love with nature- specifically, he is obsessed with going outside. This is my fault, as I have taken him on several supervised trips onto our backyard stoop. You would too if you could see how unbearably cute and content he is while sitting on my lap in a strong ray of sun. Plus, I swear that the only color he can see is green. Now that spring has sprung, the whole outside world looks like his vegetarian lunchbox.
