Genetic

It turns out that Olive loves lettuce just as much as her big brother. In fact, I think she knows the sound of the plastic tin opening and cautiously makes her way downstairs and into the kitchen to check things out. Last night I accidentally spilled a pile of slightly bad (by human standards) greens while transferring it to our compost bucket. Irving and Olive helped me clean it up.

I've been at a bit of impasse (note: while spell checking this I accidentally approved the edit "imp ass") in regard to writing here. Truthfully, about 95% of my coherent thoughts these days are about this pregnancy and I have been hesitant to log them. I am at the point where this whole thing feels half real- of course, it very much is, but most of the time I walk around thinking, "Hey there, are you really in there?" which I think is a completely normal reaction in early pregnancy.

Mostly, though, I have been adjusting to physical changes that the majority of the world would never notice. I hadn't really realized that my body would simply get thicker for the first few months- I have now officially grown out of all of my pants and have resorted to skirts and dresses, mostly because I am stubborn and don't want to buy clothes that I will again grow out of in a month. I am also hoping that the insane insomnia that has plagued me for the past 6 weeks will abate soon. It is 1/2 hormonal- I have never been so warm at night in my entire life- and 1/2 textbook insomnia- rushing thoughts, panic that I won't sleep at all- and 100% frustrating. I have not slept for more than two hours at a time in a while, except for when I visited my parents last weekend. Yes, I know that I won't sleep for more than a few hours at a time with an infant, however somehow that is more acceptable to me.

In other news, our hot peppers, bell peppers, tomatoes, eggplants, bibb lettuce, catnip and basil have all busted out. I am so excited to start the next round of seedlings and get our garden into shape. We need to build some raised beds and put up a fence at some point soon. If it's nice this weekend, I'm hoping to put in some marigolds in the front, as well.

I feel your pain (about insomnia...)
I'm 6 months pregnant now and 3 hours of sleep in a row feels like a big achievement!!!
However, at the beginning of the pregnancy, it felt like I could never have enough sleep! I would have 11 hours straight and still need a nap in the afternoon!
If you're lucky, maybe you'll get the opposite! (not sleep now and sleep in the third trimester!)

But the weird thing is... I get used to not sleeping much! I have one bad day a week when I feel like crap, then I manage to find some energy to go somewhat normally through the days...

And I agree with you : not sleeping because you need to take care of a newborn is way more acceptable than insomnia for an unknown reason!!

is it okay to take melatonin? or there's always valerian, but it's kinda gross. it's interesting you were able to sleep more at your folks house. you're not trying to do too much around the house are you? or even just thinking about stuff to do around the house, that produces plenty of stress alone. I don't even like to work from home anymore cuz I end up sweating about my crumbling house!

Cath- I was really sleepy in the very, very beginning but as soon as the hormones got pumping, sleep just disappeared. At least I will be prepared for not sleeping later in pregnancy!

Chris- my dr. said that there's not really anything I can take. Maybe half a bendryl, however that kind of stuff usually has an adverse effect on me and wakes me up. Yeah, we've been thinking a lot about the house. We have to get the basement into shape so that the cats can move downstairs! No litter box in the kitchen is a top priority :)

I love marigolds!

pardon me for asking, but what exactly has to be done to fix up a basement to prepare it to contain a litterbox? for the past several years i have been working on my basement AROUND the several litterboxes that lay claim to it first!

:) basically, we have so much shit in our basement right now that one of the cats would probably be buried at some point. plus, we are storing a lot of kitchen stuff down there that we don't want exposed to litter- the goal is to buy a couple of cheap base cabinets and a low bookshelf to create a makeshift hutch before letting the felines down.

I'm in the same spot with my blog. I'm hesitant to write about my pregnancy for a couple of reasons:
1) Writing about naps and food aversions is BORING to read day after day.
2) I don't know how much I should or want to share.

But the pregnancy consumes me and I find I have hardly anything else to write about! So, instead, the blog suffers and I feel boring. Ha.

Sorry about the insomnia. I feel like I'm always either on the couch napping or in bed sleeping these days. The worst part for me, right now, is my disgust at all things food. Even water makes me gag. I can't wait to want food again and to be able to enjoy it while I eat it.

Good luck!

yay! I haven't visited in a month, so I'm excited to hear about the pregnancy! Congratulations to you both.
