Dimwits & Other Home Improvement Stories

First of all, isn't my husband cute? Shopping for home improvement materials, however stressful, always results in some sort of smile and Alexis is usually the catalyst. He will make a wonderful father one day. Or an excellent eight year old.

So the other night Alexis had a holiday party to go to. I went to bed before he got home, leaving the kitchen lights on so that he wouldn't trip over a cat and crack his skull on the tile floor. In the morning, I flicked on the lights so that I could make coffee only to discover that all four bulbs were incredibly dim. When Alexis came down later that morning, we poked at them, wondering if perhaps all of the lights were dying at the same time or if the recent deluge of rain had effected something electrically. We leaned toward the latter, as we have found that most house-related issues always seem to require more wall ripping that initially expected.

On Sunday, I broached the topic of calling an electrician, as the dimness of the lights had really rendered them useless, if not more annoying than just standing in the dark. Before calling, I turned to the trusty Google and typed something to the effect of "lights suddenly got dim." One of the first hits dealt with recessed lighting, which we have, so I read on. The first online response was "Do you have a light dimmer on your switch?"

Light dimmer. Right. Yes. We do- it's this tiny little slider thing on the side of the switch, convenient enough for a slightly intoxicated individual to unknowingly drag downward while shutting the lights off. And tiny enough for neither of us to notice as we hemmed and hawed at our electrical misfortune of dim lights in the kitchen.

Home improvement solved! Dimwits we are. Dim, dim, dim.

In other news, we finally attacked our closets this weekend, each of which were stuffed with crap and completely disorganized. We were able to reuse three pieces of furniture that were lingering in the basement to assist with this organization, and now I can get dressed for work in the morning without Alexis' ski pants falling on my head. Plus, we got to visit a very empty IKEA, where I also purchased some really pretty wrapping paper. It turned out to be double sided, which was an added bonus.

Oh, and I also learned about faucet aerators and replaced one in our bathroom sink, bringing back the nice full stream of water instead of the paltry trickle we once had. I love faucet aerators.

you gotta love those dim moments even though they make you feel a little slow! i spent an hour trying to fix my gf's laptop after the cat sat on the keyboard and it wouldn't connect to the internet. the cat is on thin ice with her already so i was freaking out over it and wasted tons of time before realizing the cat had just pushed the "internet on/off' switch.

aerators rule.

I did the same thing in my car once. Drives you crazy doesn't it?
