Training

While one of us pushes forward with the final month of marathon training (Alexis), other more furry members of the family are being coached on how to navigate the wide world of a two-story house. Because our last move and cat merger was such a disaster, we are going about this one cautiously. We've kept the two sects isolated in two different bedrooms for the past two weeks and on Saturday, we bought a baby gate.
I took one look at the 3.5' gate once we unpacked it and said, "There is no way that this thing is going to keep the cats from going downstairs/upstairs. It's too low." But here's the thing- for right now at least, they are not jumping over it. When we let Irving and Olive out into the upstairs hall, they simply try to shove their heads through the banister slats, then they go to sleep. I guess this has affirmed one thing- cats are dumb. Either that or this is just a grace period.
10/9/08 Update: Last night while eating dinner we heard a very loud thud-plop. A few minutes later, Irving was ambling into the kitchen. Grace period over.
In the meantime, all of the cats have been granted supervised visits of the first floor when we are home. Oddly, Olga was completely freaked out. Irving has been most at home, mainly because he loves following us around, especially when I make dinner. This week he got to sample the CSA products again. Things are slowly going back to normal...

Can you PLEASE post a pic of one of them asleep with their head between the banisters? So funny, so cute.
I'm thinking about getting a kitten. A very sweet, spunky, affectionate boy kitten that aquaintences are trying to find a home for. What are your thoughts? I think of you as an expert in cat socialization and psycology.
Tahsha appears to be very tolerant of other animals and small children and is a nervous wreck when she has no company. So we thought the little guy could be good company and if they could adjust over the next 3 months, he could be a good buffer/companion when the household dynamics change with the baby. Thoughts? Anyone?

Moving cats is NOT fun. I am moving at the end of the month to a large house. My 15 yr cat did not take the last move well. This time she will have a 16 yr old male for a roommate so...
I wonder if Olga will remain Queen of the Castle.

Male kittens are a very good bet when you want to make an addition to a household that already has a cat.
I had a yoga teacher who had eight cats. When I asked if there were any female cats among them, she said, "No, all male. That's how we can manage to keep eight of them in one house together."
It took my two male cats about a week to adjust when the second one arrived as a kitten. Everything worked out just great, as you can see here.

Yes, when a "head between the slats" photo comes available, we will be viewing it with the utmost interest!
Looks like all of you are really settling in. Gratz again.

I thought my Charley cat was the only cat who ate lettuce!
