Upstairs Downstairs

2008-09-16_01.jpg

Oy. Wow. We officially own a house. As expected, yesterday was quite whirlwind and began with us writing large checks, signing many documents and getting a pile of keys, then ended with Alexis needing to go back to the office hours later and me staying behind to measure things and eventually curl up in a small ball in the upstairs hallway, thinking.

My brain is way too tired to sum up feelings right now. I'm excited to get started (and finished) with painting, as well as to move in. I have never been good at limbo periods, and right now we are straddling the packing of the past with the prepping of the future. I can't wait until we settle back into the present again. We'll get there.

In the meantime, I've been popping some photos of the house and its environs on Flickr. Right now many are restricted to friends and family (though I think most of my readers fit into the genre). I'll open them up more once we are settled.

Lastly, I began trying to identify the plants around our house yesterday. I think I have concluded that there is a hydrangea and forsythia bush, a Japanese maple, two unidentified trees, some hostas, lily of the valley, a couple of irises and some bushes (to me they look like standard New York City bushes- I'll need to do some research on that). My hunch is that I will be spending the most of my spare time in the next few weeks weeding. I'm bummed that I've missed the season for pruning...but what can you do.

P.S. For those of you who had no idea what I was talking about in the last post re: our kitchen because there was no visual, here you go.

Congrats. It sounds as though you are actually not moving in although you closed on the house. You must a have a backyard. Looking forward to gardening next Spring?

Best

No, we are in the process of moving in now. That photo was taken about an hour after the closing. But yes, *learning* how to garden next spring will be key.

Congratulations on your new home! How awesome is it having a yard? Even if just looking at it makes you sigh at the amount of work. You haven't missed fall pruning yet... you'll need to cut that Forsythia back or it will eat the children.

Congratulations!
I love your floors! The cats will love looking out at the backyard like ours do now. We just moved next to a huge wooded park and have deer, squirrels, a groundhog and raccoons. Cat heaven!
I hope all your cat family adjusts okay to your new home.

Very nice..good bones.

Enjoy, in health and happiness your new home.
Love the stairway and the very nice floors.
I can imagine the cats running up and down the stairs.

I hope the cats adjust ok!! I just got some kind of aromatherapy diffuser contraption for my cats, who are freaking out over a new schedule of mine. My husband laughed at this.

First let me say, how happy I am to see you back. Despite the fact I don't know you, I do love your blog and seeing your view of Brooklyn. Second of all, congrats on the new house! I bought one a year ago in Brooklyn, so completely understand the feelings you're going through.

As the owner of a staircase, I can tell you that cats view it as one giant cat toy, they're gonna love that.

Wow!!
Congrats.
Wanted to share that other friends of ours recently moved to the same neighborhood that you described in our last email exchange - but they rejected the brokers name of the hood and instead are happy to call the area in which they (and you?) reside - "So-Slo" as in "Slo-pe)

:)
