Paved Over

2008-04-12_65.jpg

Now that it is finally warm enough to wander around and inspect the world without losing feeling in my fingers and toes (and now that I have made some changes so that I have time to wander and breathe, at least for the next month or so), weekend walks have resumed. For whatever reason, I've been paying a lot of attention to layers in the built environment. I think it's so interesting that the ground in many areas of New York is simply paved over, as opposed to buildings, which are habitually knocked down and rebuilt. In doing so, the past sometimes lies closer to the surface than one might think.

When I found the above area off of a pier near our house, I began to think about how neat it would be if I could get my hands on a giant x-ray machine that could show me all of the layers of Brooklyn without disturbing the earth. But I guess that would take away from the magic and surprise of randomly noticing something new in your landscape. Perhaps just stumbling upon the past is good enough.

The layers are so defined.
It is most certainly, an urban mystery.

Great photo. I would be tempted to snatch a few of those granite pavers to use in my house -- doorstops, plant stands, defensive weap--, er, never mind.
