Bridge

Gowanus, Brooklyn

Last night I dreamed that Alexis and I went to a (nonexistent) bar in Tribeca to see some of his friends and watch some sort of theater art. It was late and he disappeared to talk with someone. I wandered through the building looking for him, then decided to take a walk out on the street. When I opened the door, I realized that it wasn't that late at all- perhaps only about seven-thirty in the evening, with the light just beginning to turn to dusk.

I rounded the corner near the Holland Tunnel, except there was no tunnel, it having been replaced by a giant modern bridge made of whites, light metals and glass, that looked as though it had been built by Richard Meier. At the time, however, I didn't realize it was a bridge, and thinking that it was some sort of cultural arts center attached to the bar, I stepped onto a wide moving platform (like a moving sidewalk at the airport) with a whole bunch of other people. It had been rolling very slowly, but suddenly it whizzed into gear, and I went to grab onto the guard rails only to discover that there were none- only about one-foot sidewalls.

Our moving sidewalk/bridge shot out of the interior waiting area at about forty miles an hour. I grasped the edges of the pavement with my hands, my body flattened against the ground, desperately trying to hold on. The sky was all around us, water below, and I realized that I was on a bridge that was taking me out of New York. I clung for about five minutes until it finally slowed to a stop at a station. When I got off and walked to the main street, a giant sign announced that I was in New Haven, CT. Completely relieved that I had survived the accidental trip, I took a deep breath and then remembered that I had to get back to Manhattan. And of course, the only viable route was to take the same damn bridge back over again.

(No, we're not leaving NYC.)

I too am very interested in abandoned houses. I do quite a bit of sketches, and I find that that is the thing that I draw the most. My friends live near an old abandoned farm house, they say that they have been in it, and I hope to explore it some day too. You have some pretty good shots on your site.
