As Luck Would Have It

Or, Irving's Lucky 07-07-07
the funnel adds to irving's already low self esteem

Oh dear. When we arrived home from food shopping this afternoon we discovered Irving basking in his usual sunny windowsill spot, except when we looked closely at him, his right eye was nearly swollen shut. After some debate, we took him to our local vet emergency room, as my experience with cats and punctures (we think he somehow scratched his eyelid badly) is that you sometimes wake up in the morning and to find the afflicted area swollen to the size of a softball...and the last thing we wanted was to spend Sunday morning having Irving's face drained.

An hour later, we left Park Slope with creams, eye drops and one very dejected looking Oybean. The vet gave him an e-collar again, which never ceases to make him look even more pathetic than he usually appears. I feel so bad for him. He has no idea that we will be shoving crap in his eye three times a day for a week. Something tells me that any relaxation strides our little buddy has made in the past year and a half will be completely wiped clean.

There's more to say about this vet visit...but I need to collect my thoughts a little. More details and an inquiry to come.

Oh no! And it sounded like he had been doing so well! Poor Irving. We're pulling for him (and you guys) over here.

Also, you might check out the Sick Pet Support forum for advice: http://www.sickpetsupport.com

It's still relatively new, but there is a good community there already, and you might be able to get some of the answers you are looking for.

Awww, poor baby. I took Mallow to the vet on Friday for what I thought would be a routine $25 anal gland cleaning (ew, I know), and I learned that the glands had become infected. $133 later (including blood sugar test, cortisone shot, exam, gland expression, antibiotics), the vet taught me how to clean them myself at home. Super.

Hmm, maybe Irving is of Chinese ancestry. They consider the number 8 to be lucky. His day could be 8-08-08. Poor guy! He has over a year to wait.

Poor Oyving. This photo really emphasizes the licked-bald belly, too. At least there is nothing wrong with his anal glands.

Actually, one vet once suggested that he was allergic to his own anal sacs. I am not kidding.

My dog has been receiving eye drops (right now its at 4x/day) for over 8 years now. I'm confident that Irving will do just fine.

May I suggest adding stickers to the e-collar? It makes it more festive when he's forced to wear it. Of course, my guy is totally blind, so it probably doesn't matter much to him...
