Brain Cavities

You know it's been one of those weeks when at the end you find yourself collapsed on the couch watching Growing Pains with a cat fast asleep on your back. In the academic world, we have run headlong into spring break, which means nothing to me other than that the campus is nice and quiet for five days and the library closes early, signified by someone wandering the hallways with a cow bell at 4:45 p.m. Leave or get locked in.
Growing Pains is one of the worst television shows that I have ever seen, yet I could not stop staring at it last night. Bad family sitcoms always suck me in, though there is a special place in my heart for GP and Family Ties because I grew up with them. They make me want to vomit less than shows like Seventh Heaven or Full House, which still catch me like a deer in headlights, though I usually wind up changing the channel half way through because they make me wish that that car would just kill me and get it over with. All of these shows fell victim to the "let's add another younger character because the series has been running for too many years and none of the current ones are cute anymore." They are also wonderful studies in human development- particularly how cute kids don't always wind up that way five years later. And how child stars often turn into large train wrecks (hello Olsen twins).
The only thing that could possibly help heal this senseless watching of bad 80's television is a Sunday afternoon spent watching Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle. Or perhaps when the sequel comes out in 2008. Or simply a good weekend without any school work.
P.S. I love letters. Ever since the idea of the Modern Letter Project surfaced, I have been corresponding a lot more with friends and family via snail mail. It has been a wonderful experience. I have learned that I write very different things on paper...I feel like I share more personal things, or least express them in a distinctly different manner from email. It is so wonderful. I highly recommend pen and paper.
P.P.S. Apparently the Chelsea Garden Center is opening up a store in Red Hook next to Fairway this April, which would be nice, I guess, if they weren't so damn expensive.
Semi-related: I want to buy an indoor dwarf lime plant. Anyone have any experience with this? Is it okay if cats eat the leaves?

Kirk Cameron on GP is a perfect example of child becoming a train wreck! Last I heard he had become a proselytizing born-again Christian who sells "faith-building" programs called The Way of the Master. Craaaazy.
I was obsessed with Full House until about age 10 and it was not because of the Olsen twins, it was because of Uncle Jesse.

Kirk Cameron = Crazy weird website. Yipes.
I always thought Bob Saget looked like a salamander. Although I was always jealous of Candice Cameron's big 80's sweatshirts.

It upset me when I found out Kirk Cameron and I shared a birthday. I never liked him, and am glad he's in semi-obscurity now. Lovely picture of Madame Olga sunning her tummy. Sounds like you need to join her in sunbeam sleeping.

Kirk Cameron got married near my hometown, since his crazy Christian wife grew up there (Cheektowaga, aka CheektoVegas, a suburb of Buffalo). See, I group Full House in with GP in the "shows I will watch when little brain power is available." I think I used to want to be DJ Tanner, though I hear she is also crazy religious now.

About the lime tree, I don't *think* it would be harmful to the cats, but you might ask your vet. We're actually thinking of buying a dwarf Meyer lemon tree this year.
I know that the smell of citrus is a natural repellent to cats, so they might just stay away from it on their own and it won't be an issue... but it's always best to be safe and check it out with a professional first.

i'm finding the very same thing to be true about writing with pen and paper. each time i've tried to start writing my first letter for the mlp i've found very personal things coming out and then i stop and think 'wait, i'm writing this to a complete stranger. is that okay?' i haven't decided yet if it's okay. but i think maybe it is.

Funny that Lesterhead mentions wanting to be DJ Tanner - Candace Cameron (who played DJ) is Kirk's younger sister.

I would very much like to write more letters, but haven't a clue what to write/update on a normal basis. Life isn't that exciting always, afterall. Suggestions? :)
