Haha!

Guess what? It is 9:30 AM and I am still in my pajamas. And I'm not even at work! This is because I am on vacation, more or less, until next Wednesday, which is very exciting. Yes, we have been on vacations recently, though they have all entailed traveling and hurrying to work the day after we arrived home. This week is all about not rushing. It is also all about pajamas, long walks and catching up with things like old friends and special projects, old and new. On my list for the week:

  • A nice long walk around Red Hook and Carroll Gardens to scope out my new project/test out my research.
  • Finish the new Officer's Row site, which requires some time re-learning Flash and sifting through hundreds of photographs.
  • Read books that have nothing to do with school. Suggestions welcome.
  • Movies. Again, suggestions welcome.
  • Absolutely nothing at all. This one should probably have been listed first.

All that said, let me back up a bit. We had a lovely holiday up in Saratoga; however, before we left, both Alexis and I experienced some severe anxiety about leaving our four furries alone in the big open space. They had been fighting with one another a lot and the Littlest Feline was spending most of her time on top of the kitchen cabinets, while Irving was hiding in random tiny nooks around the house. As a last ditch resort, we dragged three bookshelves over to block off the house into two private rooms, the Robettes on one side, Oy-O on the other. We then spent four days worrying that we would arrive home to four cats smushed beneath fallen shelving units.

However, when we opened the door yesterday, the two sets were quite content. In fact, when we moved everything back and reintroduced them, it was clear on Olive and Irving's part that they'd taken the Robettes absence to be some sort of holiday gift; they looked incredibly disappointed.

Check plus for the partitioning of the house. It is now confirmed that our next permanent dwelling will require walls.

Movies: The Lake house if you want sappy love. Robin Hood Men in Tights because it's a classic.

Movie suggestions: Volver (if you want to go out, I think it's still at BAM)
Waiting for Guffmann or Dog Show (or anything by/with Christopher Guest) via Netflix

P.S. Nina got a cat water fountain for Christmas! After a day of staring at it, she's now actually drinking from it instead of whining for a dripping faucet.

Great Book: Outlander by Diana Gabaldon..1st of a series of just Great Romance...ESCAPE!

Great Movie: Anything black and white...Again, ESCAPE

The Cat Situation: Stop "futsing" with them. They don't like change. It "weirds" them out. Don't move walls. Let them settle into Your lifestyle. I hope you realize that your cats feed off of your uncertainties! Relax This is coming from a "mother" of some very old cats.

It is quite true that cats do not like change. However, it has been a year and one set of cats is hurting the other when we are not there on a regular basis. Because of this, it was far more responsible of us to seperate them from one another for the chunk of time that we would be away. The other option would have been to board two of them, which we felt might have been even more disruptive.

I just finished reading "Julie and Julia," by Julie Powell. Maybe you've heard of it--the author spent a year cooking her way through Julia Childs's Bible of French cuisine. I found it a perfect holiday read, clever and funny and fast.

I know exactly what you mean about cats + lack of walls/doors. Although my two kitties get along really well (they are brothers who've never been apart)our apt is an open layout (floor-thru)and after having the cats for 6 years I developed allergies to them! One 'solution' my doctor offered (along with "get rid of the cats" to which I replied "NO" before she even got to "cats") was "keep your bedroom door shut and don't let the cats sleep in your bed" - when I said "I don't have a bedroom door" I got the most withering look of pity I think I've ever received.
