In the Heat of the Night

Favorite 1950's Brooklyn street "turf" gang names thus far:
Nits
Technicolors
Shangra-la Girls
Greene Avenue Stompers
and the winner,
The Be-Boppers, mainly because of this 1950 NYTime article: "Haircuts Involved in 'Teen' Gang War: Fancy 'Hairdos' of Be-Boppers, Who Use Cars in Raids, Cause Brooklyn Fights." Apparently, when a rival gang caught a member of the Be-Boppers, they would cut off his forelock.
In our house, the Robettes go to battle with the Twitching Whiskers. The Robettes usually win.
[Note: These were, for the most part, serious turf gangs. The way the press wrote about them in the 50's, however, was pretty darn funny.]

Corie, did you take that picture or was it their human?

O and F, sure are gang girls.
The look on Frieda's face is "looking for trouble" or "it's just so hot".
Olga is watching Frieda's back in case of a scuffle with the Twitching Whiskers.
Keep cool Lexcors!

Are there squabbles over sink space, in the heat? Prior to having good and consistent A/C, my cats would always vie for a place in the bathroom sink. Or maybe they were just odd.

Oh, now you've now made me start to look through the Times archives for no good reason. I wish the 1857-1980 file was free and accessible! Have you been doing microfilm research?

oddly, there have not been many squabbles. i think it is because they are too hot to care. irving prefers to lay in the hottest spot in the house. olga prefers the tiles.
beth-- the early stuff is available in pdf format via proquest historical newspapers but you need a login/pw. i have mine from work/school. proquest rocks my world.

Hi beth, if you have a NYPL card or Brooklyn Pub Library card - you can access all archived NYTimes and other news through their website.

just saw your comment over on my blog; i think everyone is snapping pics of our hot cats and posting them on our blogs.

my biggie purrs thinks olga is one hot mama. he says he wants to come lay with her on the cool tiles and admire each other's plump tummies....if only he weren't in denver.
