If, Then, Buts and Maybes

The weekend was a wonderful, albeit short, getaway for us. On Friday, after swapping our apartment keys for my parents' car and house keys, we made our way north to Saratoga, where we slept late, drove aimlessly for hours, barbecued, and relaxed. Somewhere along the way there was some accordion playing.
New York has made us weary. There have been a lot of small decisions to make, avenues to take, and tons of tiny if, then, buts and maybes to toss around-- all things that do not need to be dealt with immediately but are important for our future planning. We are a planning family. We also get paralyzed fairly easily.
All that said, it was lovely to wake on Sunday without the Times real estate section staring up at us. Instead of our weekend walk around Brooklyn neighborhoods, pointing out dream brownstones and frame houses and realizing that all we might afford are cinderblock condos with Fedders, if that, we peered dreamily at cottages in tiny towns and did some wondering. There was a certain peace that came from dreaming of a tiny two room house near a lake in the middle of nowhere, an escape from the city, something that might even be affordable, something that might make us feel better about being lifetime renters in the city.
Of course, these were just whimsical musings, but dreams often have the ability to help you see reality a more clearly. Sometimes, dreams open your world up just a little wider, and through that new crack of light you can see such exciting possibilities.

True, I but I haven't walked into a wall in a whole week.

Those are lovely musings. And here I am in my small city in the middle of nowhere, upon my return from a fantastic holiday in New York City, yearning for a tiny overpriced apartment :|
How is it that sometimes you need a holiday after a holiday?
