I am an anal-retentive person who is usually quite good at curbing (or at the very least hiding) compulsive habits while in the company of strangers. Public cat wrangling, however, is an impulse that I cannot seem to shake. When I see a cat on the street, no matter how mangy or mean looking, it is impossible for me not to meow at it and attempt to share some love. Alexis has decided to document this effort, and as a result, I have earned the following Flickr tag.

There are sooooo many friendly street cats in Clinton Hill, and I simply must pet all of them every time I pass.

i pick them up and squish them, if they let me. if there were four, i'd probably pick them all up at once and squish them.

you should come and cat whisper (or whatever you do) to randolph when he's all feisty.

I'm probably paranoid (okay, I am), but ever since I petted an adorable deli kitty before I noticed he was losing his fur in clumps,* I've been worried about what I might be bringing home to my own cats.

*=Both deli employees, when I asked them, maintained that the cat was getting proper care. I didn't believe it and had to restrain myself from catnapping the sweetie. (Corie, I remember from past posts that you've had to restrain yourself from similar impulses.)

Well, you're clearly performing a public service, as there are many cats that need wrangling and love. This cat looks like he's in heaven!

I think most cats like their armpits scratched because it's another place that they can't reach with their tongues. All except Irving, who can lick the fur off of any part of his body.

I never really thought about bringing diseases home to the kitties. I'll have to remember to wash my hands and not hug ones that look itchy...

You could carry around a pair of surgical gloves for just such encounters. Then you definitely would be looked at and thought of as the "crazy cat lady". Hee Hee

Or else some antibacterial hand gel, so you can clean up right after each encounter!
