Put a Little Sprinkle in My Monday

2006-06-19 0c0.jpg

Our cats have taken to lying on the floor like uncooked pancakes. Every so often, I walk by, pretend to be a spatula, and flip them over so both sides of fur can absorb the cool. I cannot tell you how much Olga is shedding. I think that we had to change a brand new vacuum bag after one once-over of the house. In short, it is hot. We left the house once yesterday to buy food. Otherwise, we lay motionless watching the World Cup. I have to say, it was not a bad day, despite the heat.

I am stuck in our hot house for an unknown period of time today, as UPS cannot seem to figure out that, of the four apartments in our building, at least two of them are occupied during the day and are capable of receiving other people’s packages. We are waiting for a rug and I cannot bear the thought of having to go pick it up from the delivery facility in this heat, so I am here at home sticking to my computer chair and collecting a fine layer of four-cat-blend fur just by existing.

The kids broke out the sprinkler cap for the fire hydrant on Beard Street yesterday and that reminded me of summer activities, or my lack of originality when it comes to them.

What is/was your favorite thing to do during the heat of summer? Help me collect some ideas, rural, urban or suburban, to test out over the next few months, as my guess is that this summer is going to be HOTT hot.

[Where did the extra "T" in "hot" originate? Is that also a Paris Hilton thing?]

eek. No air conditioning?

yeah, we have 3 a/c's but have only installed one near the bed, which we only use at night. our apartment has high ceilings and doesn't really have any walls, so cooling the whole thing down would probably bankrupt us...kind of like heating it did this winter.

Yikes, the no air conditioning thing is rough. The city in the summer can be brutal.

Favorite things to do in the blistering heat? Sit in my cool house! (Sorry.)

Actually, I was in a coffee house yesterday to meet up with a friend and it seemed the whole city of Philadelphia (or at least those sans AC) decided to cool off there while surfing the 'net and drinking iced lattes. Not a bad gig if you've got a funky place nearby with WiFi...

My other favorite thing to do in the heat? Get out of the city and head to the beach. (My husband and I are spoiled because my family has a house on LBI.) From where you are, there are definitely shore points that are do-able for the day...

Doing crossword puzzles in the backyard and then sitting under the spraygun of the hose. Drying off, drink a beer, repeat.

I try not to use the AC so I turn the fan setting to Island Breeze, drink ice tea and snack on frozen fruit. Grapes are my favorite summertime treat.

you need to get a slip and slide for your apartment. dangerous, perhaps, but think how much the cats would hate it!

rockin'. maybe we could put it on the roof (as per typical apt buildings, our roof slants). we could take giant leaps, slip down toward the kitchen, and land on the community justice center.

I live in Arizona where it's over 100 degrees every day this time of year. We eat a lot of frozen things--popsicles, frozen melon, frozen yogurt, frozen carrots, and my favorite frozen pudding. This all followed-up by drinking gallons and gallons of water.

If you get really desperate, fill-up your bathtub with cold water and all the ice cubes in your freezer. Get in and dunk your head under water. Follow-up with a frozen pudding cup.

Good luck!

Come visit us in San Francisco, of course! It's sunny and cool here.

That's so funny you referred to your cats as pancakes, because I did the same thing yesterday. J was like, "Did you just call Max a pancake?" but that's exactly what he reminded me of, all puddle-like and hot.

How in meow did you ever capture those pictures?
Did you sit there forever?

Ohhhhh, I love cats. Mine taught me how to mother.
No joke.

Purrrrrrrrrrring Cheers on a Monday no less.

Three words: Barton Springs Pool. Closer to home for you, a ride on the Staten Island Ferry is free and gets you that nice water breeze.

My favorite summertime activity was catching what we call June bugs, tying them to a piece of thread and walking around with them flying, much like you'd walk a pet dog. I look back and realize it's a bit cruel as they were simply trying to free themselves and capture by us meant certain death.

Speaking of free, there is nothing better than a game of freeze tag just as the sun goes down.

I write this as I sit next to my set-at-72-degrees a/c. My parents have always worked out of the home, so my young summers were not unlike yours, only they were working. I don't really remember what I did, except whine about the heat.

Now, as a teacher, I spend the summers at home, watching soaps and cleaning my a/ced house.

Sorry, I am no help.
