Time

Have you ever marveled at how one can be hiking a canyon at one moment, then be riding a grimy A train the next, and only a few hours have elapsed? I do. I also am awed at how planes carrying hundreds of people can get off the ground. And at people who actually own Hummers. There are a lot of those people in Los Angeles. And of mountain bike-unicyclists (explanation upcoming). But you know what I really marvel at?

Its weird and new to find that I have two families now, one on each coast. I find it gratifying and fascinating to watch my Almost Husband interact with his familyit gives me glimmers of what he must have been like as a child, insights into pieces of him that I would never know or understand without the context.

It must be incredibly difficult to have a child living on the other side of the countryeven more so when he has fallen in love and begun to lay down more permanent roots so far away. To me, that makes it all the more important that we visit as much as we can, to learn about and from one another as the concept of family grows and expands. And expand, indeed!

"Almost" will become "Actual" in ten weeks (!) And in a little more than six months, Alexis will become an uncle, which will make me an aunt by defaultquite exciting and my only opportunity, as I am an only child. I guess we are entering the Second Year of Change. Heres to families and coasts and the things that connect usgrowing and changing as time hurtles forwardtransforming us daily, ever so slightly, into who we are.

right there with you on this one. except i'm the so. cal. husband, and i have a d.c. wife, but we also live in bklyn. last week i was in cali watching hummingbirds and sunsets on top of cliffs with nobody else around, this week i'm trying to avoid frostbite and stepping in yellow puddles! anyway, i hope bi-coastalness agrees with you. it's not easy, but can be very gratifying.

Your husband must have been so happy, even though you only see him from behind, you can tell. Sunshine and family...good times.

A friend introduced me to your blog, and I'm really enjoying your intelligent, thoughtful, funny posts, and your terrific photos. You're on my regulars list now (or I'm on yours). Thanks for the nice reads.

I'm an only child too. I understand the joy of marrying into a family that expands the relationship horizons.

Only ten weeks? How is that possible?

And where are you honeymooning?

Pretty nuts, huh? It's been over a year since we decided to get married. We're going to Cabo San Lucas for the honeymoon-- well, we're vacationing a little outside of Cabo, which is perfect for us :)

That's a great shot of Lex. And yeah, families across the country are strange, though often joy-making. Soren's family is in Seattle, with one sister in Portland, OR; he's the only one out here from his immediate family.

I stumbled upon your blog by Google-ing St. Patricks Day to find a funny party picture I could use for a project at hand. I like what you say and am fascinated by the combination of words and funny pictures in your blog.

I just wanted to add that I too understand the feeling you get when thinking about how two entirely different families, yet similar in core values, are now united by the loving bond between a man and a woman. In our case, my wife is from California and I from Mexico.

Going down to my home city this spring break so she can meet the extended family that couldn't make it for the wedding! Ever been to Morelia, Michoacan? I would certainly recommend so.

PS. Thanks for the moment of inspiration that your pictures gave me.
