The Long Day

Ah, yes, ‘tis the time of year for the Idiotarod—that quasi-spontaneous convergence of New Yorkers in costumes tethered to shopping carts. I was a little less excited about the event this year, as nothing has seemed to top my first viewing of the spectacle in 2004, where a friend and I zoomed over the Manhattan bridge in a convertible despite sub-zero temperatures screaming MUSH! Still, I couldn't resist at least peeking at the festivities.
There’s nothing quite like a hundred plus people dragging stolen Pathmark carts down the steps of Fort Greene Park—but even more heartwarming was the response from your everyday people on the sidewalk. We happened upon a seventy-year old woman and her friend who were so excited and entertained that one had to smile. It was nice to see the event happen in a different neighborhood, especially one that probably did not quite expect it quite as much as Williamsburg or DUMBO.
We stuck around to cheer for the stragglers and then walked over to the first checkpoint. This was the first leg of a long Saturday—later we would attend two karaoke events, leading me to wonder once again why the concept exists in the first place. What is the allure of public karaoke? I will never fully understand.
