X Marks the Spot?

2005-12-20ratner.jpg

On the first day of the strike, Lex and I took a walk over to the Atlantic Yards, as word was that Ratner's demolition of several buildings was to begin. There was no wrecking ball in sight; however, there were these spray-painted markings in front of each building along the Dean Street site.

Do they mean demolition? I have always thought that a circled X painted on a building meant that it was uninhabitable. I have never seen them on the sidewalk.

We also walked by the Underberg Building (one of my favorites), which was far from being knocked down, but was being emptied. The door to one of the long shuttered bottom stores was open. There were some wonderful old signage/relics inside (it looked like it had been a deli or convenience store); unfortunately, there were also three or four rather cranky looking construction workers who were less than thrilled with us poking our heads inside.

Corie, are you still taking off from work? What are people doing to get there? I can't even imagine.

I was given permission to telecommute, which worked out well. I think I've actually gotten some solid work done, though I could never work from home for my living. Too many cute cats to stare at.
