Observations

2005-09-23 friday.jpg

There is an older man in my lecture class who sits at the last folding chair on the top row of the hall each Tuesday and Thursday. He is probably in his 60's and once told me that he was doing some sort of community program that allowed him to audit classes for half price. This made me smile, as I like it when people take initiative to learn, and like it even more when institutions give something to the community to enable them to do so.

Each class, this man comes in slightly disheveled, takes his seat at the crest of the lecture hall, and removes his shoes. He then crosses one leg over his knee and wiggles his toes. This does not make me smile. I sit in front of him in my coveted lefty seat, one that I am hesitant to give us because after an hour my arm begins to hurt from writing on a righty desk. His feet do not smell so hot, and even if they were rose scented, the image of dirty toes edging ever so close to my being makes me cringe.

I have contemplated asking the man to keep his shoes on. Yesterday, in fact, I turned around to ask, however he was slumped over, chin in hand, half asleep.

Sorry to say, but better just to move.
By all means, tell him, but I am sure he will do so initially but quickly revert!

Besides, I wouldn't want to sit near him at all! Eeeeek.

I think that's pretty darn rad actually. I aspire to be that guy. In fact I've been thinking 'bout this the past few days as I travel around, unshowered, and plant my shoeless body indian style in various cafes across the country.
