Fabulous

Unbeknownst to most of the world, the Whisker Project continues, and I swear, the submissions get cooler and more creative each week (yes, I DO get a submission every week or so).

2005-07--20 whiskers3.jpg

Unfortunately, at this time I am scanner-less, which means that I have piles of envelopes with whiskers inside them and no way to put them on the site. And even if I did have a scanner, I dumbly deleted the whisker blog by accident. The files are still sitting on the sever, but no longer on Moveable Type. How on earth do I fix that?

Regardless, the number of whiskers collected has grown quite large. I have been archiving them by cat name, human, and location, however I am still trying to decide what to do with the actual whiskers (Glass vials? Collage? Vellum envelopes?). The point of the project has always been to look at how unique fascinations connect people and compel them to participate, but as the submissions increase, whisker storage has become a top priority.

Lend me your ideas. No, I will not throw them away because you think it's gross.

Why not make a globe out of a styrofoam ball and stick the whiskers in their origination locations? Suspend the globe with string and a staple in the North Pole.

did you delete the blog via MT or just delete the MT server files? the mysql db may still be on the server. if you back it up, recreate the blog, and then restore the database, it should come back.

yeah, i deleted it via MT. i have no idea how it happened, either. it just disappeared.

check your mysql databases to see if it's still there and has data. if so, we may be able to raise the dead...

I was collecting whiskers since you answered my mail. I only need one of Bonita because Lola and Princesa already made a donation for the Project.
I'm still waiting for the black one. So, please donīt tell me that you donīt know what to do with the actual whiskers 'cause Iīm almost feeling frustrated :)

Ha! Don't worry. It's not that I don't know what to do with them, it more like I'd like to hear other people's ideas. My original plan was to archive them in small vials (which I already use for my own cats). But meanwhile, the idea is to stay virtual and scan 'em all into the whisker museum.

I like the idea of keeping them in the original packaging. People seem to display them so uniquely it would be a shame to pick apart their art.

I like the tiny glass container idea, but if they were sent to you taped to a nice collage like you have pictured, why not frame some of them or put them into a scrapbook?

Now I breathe ;)

Iīll send you all the whiskers as soon as I found one black. I donīt know why Bonita doesnīt lose any.

I'll have to round up some whiskers for you. Monet has very long ones, Elliot has ones that curve up, giving him a moustachioed look and Rascal sheds so much he will never notice a missing whisker.
How about a whisker shrine! You could line up your whisker vials like votive candles. Hmm, maybe I'll send you an ATC whisker shrine (2.5 X 3.5 inches). All I need now are the whiskers.
I think you may need the larger variety shrine for your extensive collection. Good luck!

I can send you some test tubes and stoppers. And also the whiskers that I have been saving for you.

You got our whiskers! Scout will be so proud.

So, here are my ideas for displaying/preserving your collection:

1. Display them in front of a very strong, focused beam of light -
projecting their shadows onto your wall. Think shadow puppets.
(maybe not great for preservation)

2. Sandwich them between semi-opaque (think frosted) glass and light
them from behind- this is a smaller version from above.

3. Coat or cast them in various precious metals. (probably easiest
to make molds - but I've seen roses edged in gold, and baby shoes in
bronze, so I suppose anything is possible.)

4. Embed them in clear plastic (they sell two part epoxy-resins at art
supply stores for plastic casting. Make sure you get a clear resin
with a UV-protected additive to keep the plastic clear - it yellows
over time.)

5. Make paintbrushes out of them and paint portraints of their donors.

we are all so proud to see our whiskers displayed on your page. did you enjoy the collage? ;-)

someone on flickr put her whiskers into a pin cushion, which looks really cool. Or how about a styrofoam block covered in velvet? I also like Mycroft's idea of sandwiching them between perspex and displaying them - I might pinch that idea myself!

that is so funny-- lex gave me the exact same pin cushion for my birthday.
