Realization #1

2005-05-22 thirdst.jpg

I got in early to work today and spent the first ten minutes surveying my cubicle. For someone who has been at the same job for six years, I have a surprisingly little amount of crap [Muppet figurines aside]. There is, however, one important question:

How does one move a four and a half foot avocado plant from the West Village to Red Hook without a car?

Then there is the side question:

Why hasn't my five-year-old avocado tree grown higher than four and a half feet?

definately cab. and does this mean you're moving into lex's apartment?

Posted by: dahl at May 26, 2005 10:47 AM

that's an expensive cab.

not, not moving to red hook-- it's just that if i brought the avocado plant home to my place, irving will eat it and barf everywhere. he cannot be trusted around greens of any kind.

Can you not borrow a car?

Or, rent one to coincide with your last day and use it to daytrip someplace?

Whatever you do, DON'T leave the framed photo of me behind!

Side question, answered: Because tropical trees just fundamentally don't like being houseplants. (Have you ever seen a ficus tree in its natural conditions, like in Florida? They are amazing and totally different from the ficus most of us know.)

New York Rent A Car (in the parking garage of the Brooklyn Marriott) has pretty good rates during the summer. I used to use them pre-Volvo all the time.

you should sign up for a zipcar membership. they keep a few cars in Park Slope. Its only 10-12 dollars an hour for a quick rental.

Is this a tree from an avo pit or one that produces actual avocados? If the former, they often max out at the current height. They also need to be cut back often to creat the branch-y look people like. If the latter, that is SO COOL, and can I please have a home-grown one?

Posted by: deb at May 26, 2005 2:31 PM

Unfortunately, just from a pit. It's not big enough to grow babies, though I was told that it is possible, but a fluke. I just wish its trunk would get sturdier. Last time I moved it from Morton St to 13th St, it nearly uprooted itself in the wind.

1. Bring Irving to work.
2. Have him eat the avacado tree there and barf there.
3. Bring Irving home

A-V-O-C-A-D-O, whoa, AVOCADO

Don't you know...

They're green and gushy

Soft and smushy

Mash them up and serve them as a dip (with a chip!)

Parents love 'em

Eat more of 'em

Then they wonder why their clothes won't fit (hissy fit)

A-V-O-C-A-D-O spells AVOCADO (It's the pits!)

A-V-O-C-A-D-O, whoa, AVOCADO

Don't you know ...

We grow them here, and

Sell them there, and

All the world enjoys them

That's a fact! (Jack)

Cool and easy,

Chili cheesy

Guacamole Nachos for a snack (GACK!!)

A-V-O-C-A-D-O spells AVOCADO (It's the pits!

A-V-O-C-A-D-O,

A-V-O-C-A-D-O,

Alas, not my own creation.

Take Irving to Red Hook.
Go back for the avocado plant.
Drop the avocado plant off in Red Hook and take Irving back to the office.
Leave Irving in the office, take the fox to Red Hook and leave it with the avocado plant.
Go back for Irving and bring him to Red Hook.

Ta-da! Everything's in Red Hook-problem solved!
