wow, a handyman's special. they're not really tearing all this stuff down are they? at least save the pool table!

It's amazing how much beauty there is in ruin.

the pool table was one of the best surprises of the day. there was nothing really left inside the houses-- the pool table was the only evidence of families living there.

5:25pm And now I will take a moment of silence for the old pool table that didn’t make it…..I know its family will miss her.

I have been going by these houses for years and was always facinated by them. I really wish something could be done to save and restore them. It would be quite a village of beautiful old townhouses. Too bad.

BTW how did you get in there??
Posted by: Tom at April 7, 2005 9:46 AM
We're working on an oral history about a family that lived in the houses. We attained permission from the Brooklyn Navy Yard specifically for the project-- and will be sharing our materials with the Navy Yard archives.

just came across your project, very interesting and good to see, i don't want to lose track of what your doing. I've always been very curious about those officers quarters or whatever all those old dilapidated houses are...i didn't know there was access inside there, but sometimes i see dogs in there...i mean i know there's people working in buildings on those grounds, but i figured these houses were fenced in or something.

oh yes, they are fenced and certainly not open to the public. we had permission.
