Corie Leigh

Yesterday afternoon, suddenly remembering the holiday, I called my Grandmother to wish her a St. Patrick’s Day. Earlier in the week she had, for the first time probably in the existence of the Queens Trancho clan, pushed back the date of our St. Patrick’s Day dinner (which, to my memory, I have never gone) because she had choir practice. This year it will occur on Saturday and I will attend, with Almost-Husband in tow.

Grandma Jane was in a twitter when she answered the phone. The choir director had asked her to bring Irish coffee to the meeting. She had baked soda bread and obtained the ingredients for the brew. Carrying the the urn and the bread to the church wasn't a problem, but the coffee would be tricky to prepare on site.

Excuse me Grandma
, I asked, ignorant to what Irish coffee actually was. Isn’t Irish coffee just, like, um, coffee with a shot or two of whiskey in it?

Well, yes, she replied, but the cream has to float on the top just so...

But Grandma
, I interrupted again, if you put enough whiskey in it, no one in the choir will notice.

Corie Leigh, she exclaimed in the patented Oh Robert tone given to my father when he says something ridiculous (no one but my Grandmother calls my father Robert). You’re making me feel better already.

Something tells me that it was some rockin' senior citizen's choir group last night.

This is what happens when you use technology before enough coffee.

The comment above is from me, not Corie.

2 oz Irish Whisky
4 oz HOT black coffee
1-1.5 tsp. sugar
SLIGHTLY thickened, unsweetend heavy cream

Pour 1.5 oz whisky into clear, straight sided glass with handle or stem. Add coffee. Stir in sugar. While waiting for coffee to stop spinning and sugar to disolve, drink other .5 ounce of whisky.

Using the back of a spoon, SLOWLY float the cream on top of coffee.

The finished product should look like a pint of stout.

And if you bring a bottle of Creme de Menthe anywhere near the thing, you need to slapped upside the head.

People always forget the sugar. The sugar is key.

Or the easier version:
Drink whiskey.

Have coffee next morning.

With cream.
