It Never Ends

2005-02-01ollie2.jpg

In the nuttiness of the past few days, I neglected to mention something very important.

Guess who got a new camera?

The Rebel arrived much sooner than I had expected. I barely had time to prepare for its entrance into my life, such as kitten proofing the house [Olive, take your paw OFF OF THAT STRAP RIGHT NOW] and purchasing proper attire for my new baby’s sleek, black body and shiny new lens.

You see, it never ends. There is always a need for accessories.

Last night I did a little research on camera bags. I realized that, if I am going to try to carry a digital SLR with me to work every day, the proper cushioning is required. Somehow, a worn leather briefcase doesn't cut it. The problem is that I am a snob and I am difficult. If I am going to wear a camera bag so often, it needs to look nice. I am so over looking like a first year NYU film student. Strap on one of those gigantic 16mm battery packs and I will be right back in 1997. No thanks.

I'm considering the Crumpler Tallee, however I need to actually see it before I take the plunge. Any suggestions for camera bags that look nice [and can double as an actual messenger bag so that I can carry other things, as well]?

yay! new camera! :)
Somehow I've made it 7 months without ever getting a camera bag ... hmmm.... that one's nice though!

I think the Australian website is one of the more annoying sites out there. I do like their bags, though. I'm going to take a trip to B&H this weekend to look at them.

It is a very fun camera that now opens up a whole new array of "me wantees," such as an external hard drive and something to make my computer move faster (it took twenty minutes for it to load up 80 photos at 18M apiece-- and that was just to show the files as a list FROM the flash card).

But man, that clickity-clack sound is so satisfying.

And yes, Tien, I do carry a briefcase-like bag. It's not your traditional kind, though. It's kind of like a Coach leather messenger bag. It's heavy as sin.

you know, i could have made a recording of the clikity-clack and then given you a tape for a payment of say...$200?

Posted by: tien at February 2, 2005 9:17 AM

um. no.

Posted by: corie at February 2, 2005 9:32 AM

I've never found sin to be heavy at all. Hmmm.

You should check out the Crumpler store on Spring Street. (45 Spring St.) Since they also carry the non-photo specific bags, which may actually fit your needs more. Since it's easier to find a good looking bag that can safely hold a camera, than a camera bag that you can put other things in and looks good.

Are you shooting RAW or in JPEGS? 18MB a-piece! phew! Time for an external...

Posted by: yp at February 2, 2005 1:27 PM

Yeah, I know. I think it's at the highest jpg (I haven't had time to fiddle with it much since I got it). I'm going to make it a smaller jpg, as I really don't need to be shooting in RAW.

I own the Tallee - and I think it is...ok. It is big enough to carry my Rebel and two prime lenses and film. But it seems to be either too small that I can't fit what I want into it, or too big so I want to bring the kitchen sink. They are very durable bags and are quite okeasing to the eye for bag snobs (like me) But I almost wish I had bought one of the backpack bags (you want to trade?). They also sell padded inserts which are nice - you just slip them into whatever bag you have. I would suggest bringing everything you want to carry and try to fit it into whatever bag you buy. Going to B&H might not be the best idea - but I know they have all of the bags. I think Adorama at Union Square have some of the styles. I also remember recently seeing the Spring Street shop closed - as in empty and for rent. If you have any other questions email me.

Corie

Which lens came with the camera?

Posted by: Mike at February 3, 2005 5:04 AM

I actually have had my Rebel for a little over a year now and I have a great bag for it. It looks like a mini backback, is perfectly cushioned and the insides are such that you can adjust how it's laid out so you can make a perfect little spot for the camera and other spots for various other lenses. Don't know if this is your style, but it's come in very handy for me.

I love the details and reflections in Olive's (huge) eyes.

Looking forward to more photos!

Hmm. I might consider the inserts. I didn't realize that they sold them. Might be cheaper and more convenient in the long run. I sense a trip to B&H this weekend...

Mike, I have the kit lens-- the 18-55mm.
