Stacking Cats

I need $700K by Sunday. Could anyone help me out?

2005-01-21 triplex.jpgRecently, rumors of possible cohabitation have been bouncing between the BF and I. Most have been little giggles and swoons, taking the form of wouldn’t it be so nice if we didn’t have to leave one another and holy crap the bus took forever to get me from Red Hook to Park Slope and it was f’n cold. We are both more than amenable to the idea of living together—so much so that I must admit my smiles make ME nauseous—but hey, how often does that happen from something good?

Of course, there are complications—my apartment is too small for two people, his is large enough but not central to transportation (and I, of course, am a snob and require a subway close by). He has a lease and I have a mortgage. The biggest issue, however, has nothing to do with location or money. It has to do with cats. FOUR of them.

How on earth do two people and four cats live with one another in a city like New York? Is it at all possible to do without accidentally putting your foot in a litter pan every time you turn around? Would friends with allergies ever visit us? Would Irving finally have his panic induced heart attack? We would need a lot of room for the six of us. As my father said, a litter box the size of a bathtub would be required. So far, I have only found one solution for this problem.

A triplex. It is for sale. It is cute. It's in the neighborhood and is a condo. Did I mention that it is adorable? Let me say it again. The apartment is the most loveable three-story structure for a reasonable price that I have seen in a long time. We could all have our own floors (two humans and the cats, respectively)! It is perfect.

Now, about that $700K. Anyone want to sponsor a cute couple and their four cats? We are so up for grabs.

Hmmm... You might get someone to give you $700K but lose your parents in the process.

What floor(s) is this on? Will we have to climb six flights of stairs AND THEN CLIMB STAIRS GETTING FROM ONE ROOM TO THE NEXT?!?!?!

How easily you forget...

Oh, dear father, the entrance is on the 1st floor, as if the living and dining room, meaning that you would climb LESS flights of stairs then you ever have before.

Pony up the cash :)

Really like your diagrams :)

I'd like it better if I owned it!

for that kind of money you could buy a whole house, although it would have to be a house that needed some real work. if the cats get along, you don't have to worry much about space for them. the 3 cats who live with me don't even get along all that well but they often hang out in the same room (or bed) together. their only concern is who's got the food.

Yes, a whole house in Red Hook.

I think Olive and Frieda combined can be considered one cat. so we really are only talking about three cats. But then we have to stunt her growth. How does she like her coffee?

Maybe we could consider a duplex?

You see, a house requires far more responsibility than a condo. Based on my recent experience with building management, I don't want any more responsibilites than I already have. A condo makes sense.

I love you dear, but Red Hook is too far. We could have a duplex, but then we would need a car :)

uh...condo's aren't always less headaches.

I live with my fiance and six cats in a small, 2-bedroom apartment in Union City, NJ. We found that using clumping cat litter and cleaning the litter box daily allows us to have only one small box in the bathroom. Also, buying a heavy-duty vacuum cleaner (i.e. Dyson) helps with the extra cat hair. It'll be an adjustment for everyone (especially the cats), but it can definitely work. Good luck.

Send me the contract, I will buy it, and then lease it to you. How does that sound?

it's too much. I can't take it.

me and my mom have been living in our apartment in queens forever, always with a minimum of 2 cats. 3 at the moment. it's not as hard as it seems. it'll be harder for the cats than anything else, but after a week of hiding under the bed, in the closet, etc. they'll be fine

Upon my recent co-habitation we only combined 2 cats, in a 2-story (tiny) house...unfortunately they are both old guys (Irving is Beavis' doppelganger) and get along but have territory issues (spraying! Everywhere! BOOKS! CDs! ACK!) and therefore have been separated since just after Thanksgiving - via a REALLY ugly plywood wall. *sigh* I wish you all kinds of luck - but when they say introduce them to each other REAL SLOW LIKE - do it!!!! It will save hours of cleaning & heartbreak later. And I hope you get that $700k soon. :-) Sounds like a great place!!

Jason, what's too much? If you don't mind me asking.
