Shoe Shopping with Skutchie

or
Learning to be a Girl from a Queen

2005-01-09 shoes2.jpg

Skutchie’s true age and gender is revealed via three activities: watching television, reading about arts and crafts, or looking at women’s clothing. Emerging from all three is his penchant for catty, fourteen-year old girl behavior that, if you removed the image of a 6’ man with short hair wearing khakis and a button up shirt, you would swear is flying out of the pages of Seventeen Magazine.

Now, it has already been established that I am no more of a 27-year-old woman than Skutch is a 41-year-old man. If he is a fashionisto tween at heart, then I am more like an 8-year-old boy in play clothes. When not at work, I am in jeans and sneakers. I finally got around to wearing skirts about a year ago. I never wear dresses. When occasions arise that require wearing one, I am sent in a complete tizzy because I am rather challenged when it comes to fancier-than-skirt fashion. Moreover, I rarely care about the disability.

Knowing this, I invested in Skutchie's assistance in my least favorite purchasing activity: dress shoe shopping. The following conversation ensued:

Me: What about these [holding up a pair of flats with a tiny 1/2" heel]?

Skutch: You cannot wear those. You cannot go to a wedding wearing slippers. You need to wear something with a HEEL or you might as well go in clogs.

Me: [Thinking: Hmm, clogs sound nice to me.] David, these heels are 3" high. Have you ever worn three-inch heels before? They hurt like a bitch.

Skutch: Yes, in fact I HAVE worn three inch spikes before. In fact, mine were much HIGHER.

I wound up buying heels.

I didn't understood the title, first :-)) I like your shoes, they are not really funky, but it's a good first "feminine" try ! Now, I would like to see the dress ;) A bit colored ?

Skutchie is my friend David's nickname and he has a tendancy (and I am exaggerating for blog purposes) to be a queen.

Oh, I didn't want them to be funky. I was aiming for traditional, or as traditional as possible, and something that I could actually walk in.

Your footwear preferences sound scarily similar to mine, Corie. In fact, I don't think I own a pair of dress shoes. If I was forced to wear a skirt (kicking and screaming) I'd probably have to wear my FMB's.

I had the opportunity to see said shoes and dress last night.

Oh my.

Beautiful!

What are FMBs?

I might also add that buying fancy shoes and a strapless push up bra (note, there's not much to push up) in one evening was rather distressing to me. I actually called my mother en route to the subway, to which she responded Who are you turning into?

going to be in a wedding?

Posted by: tien at January 11, 2005 11:40 AM

nope, just attending one. thank goodness.

Posted by: corie at January 11, 2005 11:52 AM

hmm. apparently i'm a best man in a wedding. just found out (via email!!) about the best man thing, despite the fact that the bachelor party is this weekend.

The heels are too low for my taste. I like high heels. Actually, in fashion here in Spain.

Hope you are better from your flu

High heels are not conducive to city streets...or moving quickly, etc. Also, I can't balance in them and they hurt my feet. 'Nuff said.

Posted by: corie at January 11, 2005 2:32 PM

those heels aren't high enough. Do we even call those heels? I'm thinking Mariah's in the Honey video. while we're at it, let's strip your hair platinum, grow it out -- no, no, that takes too long -- get vinyl extentions, collagen inject your lips, paste them with fire engine red lip gloss, blue eye shadow, add eye lashes, and mini skirt it, but with a pleat -- this is a wedding for chris sake -- and a nice blouse with a partial v neck down to the cleavage.

Then you'd be set.

are you insinuating that i dress like christina aquilera? just checking, cuz you KNOW i won't fill a leather bra without some mad padding.

Posted by: corie at January 11, 2005 3:27 PM

FMB's are the nice way of referring to fuck-me boots.

And I'm seriously debating wearing ballet slippers with my wedding dress - I figure the dress is long and no one will see them, so I might as well be confortable!

Posted by: dahl at January 11, 2005 5:09 PM

i hate nothing more than heels (except maybe uncomfortable bras). the last time i wore a skirt was my wedding 7 months ago (and that was technically a dress). i almost hate attending weddings because i know i'll have to get dressed up and i HATE everything about dressing up.
i'm all about the comfortability factor. which may be why nobody believes how old i am.

Posted by: nicole at January 11, 2005 8:20 PM

dahl - you should definitely wear ballet slippers. It's my most fervent dream to get married barefoot

Posted by: jenn at January 11, 2005 8:33 PM

corie - i like the shoes

Posted by: jenn at January 11, 2005 8:35 PM

MFB's = f**k me boots :)

Nicole, I totally forgot about my wedding shoes! Mine were flat, ballet pump style, but mules (I got married in St Lucia, and wanted something that was going to be really comfy). Smartest pair of shoes I ever bought...

Posted by: domino at January 12, 2005 2:26 AM

gah - ignore me, I just woke up and I'm reading comments backwards :)

For all the bachelors reading...
The best wedding is the non-existent

Posted by: Mike at January 12, 2005 4:32 AM

should i ever get married, i doubt i would even go through with wearing one of those giant foofy wedding dresses. they look incredibly uncomfortable.

Posted by: corie at January 12, 2005 9:12 AM

Those shoes are fabulous, and very feminine, in my opinion. I've been on a hunt for good shoes - can I ask who makes those??

Posted by: Paz at January 12, 2005 11:04 AM

They are Cole Haans. They had a nice selection of them at DSW, my new favorite discount place.

Posted by: corie at January 12, 2005 11:08 AM

Very cute.
I notice it is always the boys who have never worn heels who say, "Those are too low! Wear higher ones!"

Posted by: abby at January 12, 2005 11:55 AM

I don't know if I am happy with being called tween rather than pre-teen. I love the shoes, and am proud of you for going with some sort of heels. Dahl - for your own wedding, ballet slippers work, so do boots. Whatever gets you through the day in comfort, though avoid the sneakers, you won't dance well in them.
