Yesterday, select members of my office went on a little inquiry field trip. Usually we visit an art exhibit of some sort (it pays to have museum educators on staff!), and this Tuesday we investigated the Rubin Museum of Art (RMA). I had no idea that the RMA existed-- it resides in the old Chelsea Barney's Department Store on West 17th Street and specializes in Himalayan art.

I'm not a big fan of Himalayan art (too much to look at, too little time), however the works were quite exquisite. What is more, the building was amazing. At six floors and 70,000 square feet, it housed an amazingly large collection of textiles, paintings, sculptures, and other artifacts. A wonderful spiral staircase cuts through the center of the museum, which is suppsoed to be a metaphor for travelling through the levels of meaning in Himalayan art.

Hmm. Who knew?
