Oy, the Fruits of Procrastination

So, despite the fact that I have known for a few weeks that I needed new running shoes, I procrastinated.

Normally, this would be fine...but now, six days before the marathon, I think I might have screwed myself over. Basically, I don't have time to break them in-- and I shouldn't be running distances that would break them in (nothing over 5mi this week).

Do I buy new running shoes and cross my fingers that their newness won't hurt my feet?

or

Do I stick with the old ones, which are a smidge too small once I get past 20 miles and are losing their cushioning?

You know you're getting nervous when things like this take over your thoughts for more than an hour straight and your stomach turns into a ball of cement just thinking about it.

Oy. You'd think buying shoes would have been something that I'd leapt at.

I was thinking the same thing. Zola Budd lives!

I used to love it, too. I think my excitement waned when I could no longer wear them to work.

under most circumstances, you should probably stick with the old shoes. in my experience, i was hurting all-over by mile 20--regardless of my year old running shoes.

however, only if your current shoes are in really bad shape, and you _do_ know of a brand/type that fits you very well (i.e. a shoe that doesn't have to be broken in much), then you should go for that new pair.

but good luck this weekend--and remember to get some sleep two nights before the marathon (b/c you won't be sleeping much the night before)! :)

Yeah, maybe I'll just swaddle my feet with those blister pads and hope my big toe holds up!

Sleep? Who can sleep? We have the election hoo-ha until at least tomorrow...then race jitters. I need a sedative :P

Um...I'm a bit of shoe whore but I'd like to state the obvious (to me): If you need new running shoes anyway, go ahead and buy a pair. You can always decide up to the moment what to wear for the marathon.
