Last Thoughts

Holy crud. Who knew the body could hurt so much? Last night I felt like a 16-wheeler had run over the lower portion of my body. I could not sleep from the throbbing. This morning, things are better. I am surprised that walking is not that much of an issue. In fact, I am going to try and accomplish two goals today: buy those new running shoes and visit Dimsum (aka Dimitri).

The marathon was such an amazing experience. I took the Prospect Park Track Club bus from PPW and 9th Street. Amy, the woman who sat next to me, and I were both first time marathon runners. We began to talk during the ride and wound up staying with one another all through the 3-hour wait at Fort Wadsworth. At some point during that time, it was discovered that she was a good friend of my friend MP and his wife. Talk about a small world. Anyway, thank you Amy, wherever you are. You helped me stay calm during a time that could have been very lonely.

The marathon itself was a wonderful experience. I loved running through all of the boroughs, watching the various neighborhoods go by and, at one point, taking mental note of some nice graffiti to go back and photograph. I was amazed at the number of people with cell phones—people who were actually talking on cell phones while running. I was also amazed at the sheer number of people who came out to support complete strangers. I found myself getting teary more than once, simply from being overwhelmed by happiness and pride.

I never hit the 20-mile wall. At about 18, I began to wonder when the hell Manhattan was going to end, and then I saw the bridge to the Bronx and knew that I would be done soon. The hardest part for me was the last two miles—I had read the course wrong and was confused at how it was going to run. It is rather hilly in the park—minor inclines, but still, for people who have already run 24 miles, hills just the same. But when I saw that finish line…I had not felt that good in a long, long time.

Then I got to wrap myself up like a baked potato and go find Lex.

Did anyone see the guy running in full Elvis regalia? There were a lot of times that I really wished I had brought my camera.

Congrats on an awesome first marathon! What an impressive finish! Are you going to run it next year?

Posted by: Alaina at November 8, 2004 11:42 AM

I did not see the one you called Elvis, but there was a Stormtrooper I saw running on 4th Avenue in full gear.

I took a picture of the Elvis guy! Didn't catch the guy in the furry Scooby-Doo suit though.

There was one woman who seemed to be having a totally casual conversation on her cell phone "Sorry I missed you on First Ave. Maybe I'll catch up with you later..."

I saw Elvis, Scoobie, and a guy painted head to toe in Red, White and Blue paint. It was starting to drip off by mile 6. Wonder what he looked like by the end.

Congratulations! (and better you than me - even if I wanted to, my old kness would never allow it)

Congratulations! I second Alaina's question: "are you going to run it next year?"

hi, congrats on finishing the marathon! as a lazy picture-taker on the side lines, was very impressed by everyone with the guts and gall to run.

Posted by: youngna at November 8, 2004 5:42 PM

i'm totally going to do it next year!

Nice job! You make it sound like it was so easy. you definitely passed me at some point in the park probably. I was hurtin' those last couple of miles.

My friend G said when you hit mile 25 you're like, "I'm never doing this again!" Then after the race you say, "Wow, that was such an amazing experience. I'd consider doing that again." Two weeks later, "I'm signing up for next year!"

I am currently considering... ;)

congrats. What an amazing day!
