Fanatic

I might have polar reactions to most things, however when it comes to fun obsessions, I have learned to temper myself. I might think whisker collecting is the cat’s meow, but I won’t weave them into wall art. I love my Oybean, but I am sparing when it comes to wearing my Uncle Irving baby doll t-shirt in public.

On Saturday, I spent some time debating over whether to wear my Muppet Love sweatshirt to the Muppet Retrospective, however decided at the last second not to. To me, some things are just meant for personal pleasure and internet publication. At least that was my initial take on it.

My Jim Henson action figure arrived on Friday. He is great. Little did I know, however, that they would have them at BAM that night. They sold out quickly and there was a constant slightly panicked murmur ricocheting through the packed theater.

Where did you get him? hissed a man in front of me to a girl to my side who donned a Kermit t-shirt. She explained that they were selling them for a while and there none left.

Jerry Juhl bought the last one, though, so it’s all okay.

Yes, the man in front of me said, yes, that makes it all okay.

When I explained to them that I had bought mine online several days ago, they were flabbergasted.

I thought they hadn’t been released in the US yet, the beKermited woman exclaimed.

Do you have them ALL?, Man in Front asked.

I started to say No, I’m not that fana… and then paused, noticing the knowledge base and intensity of my conversers.

Do you have Sweetums?
My Sweetums feet fell off. I had to send him back.
I have them ALL, Kermit Girl explained.

She had all of the play sets—the Muppet backstage, the Swedish Chef’s kitchen, all of them. When I asked her where the heck she put them, she explained that her apartment was way too small. Every so often, she takes a few out and sets them up, just for fun, and then rotates them like those ceramic Christmas villages.

Impressive.

What a wonderful evening. When A returned with our popcorn, I was leaning back in my seat, satisfied, calm, happy that I was not the only Muppet freak in this world. In fact, I was the compassionate conservative of the group. There’s something about a retrospective that brings the best fanatics out of the woodwork; it makes things quite entertaining. I might have wiggled one toe out of the closet that night, but others were parading in all their glory.

Kermit Bless them.

did you just call yourself a compassionate conservative?

In the context of Muppet fanaticism, it seemed that way :)

Geez, a simple internet search would save these people a lot of grief.

Apparently, they had searched. Maybe in the wrong places. I had trouble finding it, too, until you posted that link.

Hmmm. Maybe I'm better than I think...?

I thought Edward James Olmos (besides being a great actor) was sorta infamous for having a pockmarked face... kind of like James Hetfield from Metallica, and the Jim Henson doll's face is... well, now my joke is thoroughly diffused!

ah! i get it. jim henson actually did have a pockmarked face! i never realized it until i saw some of the footage of him this weekend. he was actually a rather funny looking man, in that gangly Abraham Lincoln kind of way.

And from what I remember from "Time Piece", he wore an Abraham Lincoln outfit at some point during one of the running sequences.

He was interesting looking and had one of those faces that looked really kind. But also there was a semi-sinister glint in his eye - like a trickster.
