Stupidity: The Temperature at which Flesh Burns

While cooking a nice cool weather dish last night, I did one of the dumbest maneuvers in the history of me in the kitchen.

The braised chicken with balsamic and red wine sauce was nearly finished. Chatting with J, I open the oven door, slid out the rack, and grasped the pot top handle, which was a) metal and b) had been sitting in a 350 degree oven for 50 minutes, with bare hands.

Let's just say that I no longer have any fingerprints on the ring, middle, and pointer fingers of my right hand. I also had to eat dinner with one hand, as the other sat in a bowl of cold water for the rest of the night.

Eating with on hand is challenging. Touching 350-degree metal pot handles with no protection hurts.

ouch! so does that mean you can't type very well either?

i've burnt the top of my middle finger twice while making pizza. on the oven at 500+.

the burns are actually across the pads of my fingers-- like right above the first crease. it doesn't hurt anymore-- the skin is all dead and dry. It's pretty gross. I can't feel anything there.

i have some vicodin left over from my wisdom tooth extraction if you need it. actually, maybe i'll just take it.

hmm. thanks for the 30 second opportunity!

it's just that i totally forgot i still have it, and it sure does make the day go smoother! but seriously if you want it (like if the burn makes it hard to sleep etc) you can have some. just don't tell the DEA!

Having once grabbed a hot oven rack with my bare hand (somehow reasoning that, since it wasn't the pan it wouldn't be hot), I can vouch for the ouch!

BTW, did you know the DEA has a museum of sorts in Times Square? The current exhibit is "Target America: Drug Traffickers, Terrorists and You."

Are you right-handed?

ha! "Target America: Drug Traffickers, Terrorists and You"? so now i'm a target along with the terrorists and drug dealers? we're all the same to the govt.

nope, left handed. but rather ambidextrous.

i'd heard about that exhibit and have been meaning to go see it. i think it's funny that it's housed in times square. it's kind of like housing it in washington square ten years ago.

I am curious about the recipe, except for the grilled fingertips part.

It was a pretty good recipe-- you braise the chicken thighs in a tomato-based sauce (a tiny bit of tomato paste and some diced tomatoes) with dry red wine, fresh majoram, chili flakes, and a bay leaf. While it's in the oven, you create a simple reserve using balsamic vinegar. You add the reserve and swiss chard to the pot, simmer on the stovetop for a bit, and then you're ready to eat.

Just don't take the pot top off with your bare hands.

nothin' like some pain to bring your memory back real quick ! of course its too late by then.
I burned the crap out of my hand grabbing a hot toaster like 10 years ago and I still freak out on touching toasters. Its like a phobia I guess.

yea. i grabbed my straightening iron which had been on for over an hour, heat on max, with my bare hands last summer. i also burn myself almost daily on the 750º oven at work. seems to be a family trait. but i used some silver cream stuff, no scars :)
