Low Gear? Try No Gear.

(Clarification: Coincidental sign found on the side of the road, car dents there prior to our borrowing the vehicle...no accident occured!)
Destination: Storm King Art Center in Mountainville, NY.
Justification: The yearning for a little foliage, art, and general daytrip getaway.
On Sunday, A and I set sail in a borrowed car for the great wilds of New York. You know, all of that other land called New York but without the word City at the end.

Foliage was near peak in Orange County. We stopped along 9W to take in the view. Despite chilly gray day, the reds and yellows still felt brilliant. If it had not been for the presence of West Point paratrooper practice, the whole thing might have felt quite quaint.
##
Um. Yeah. Did I mention that the clutch blew?
About two minutes after climbing back into the car, A noted a strange sticking of the clutch, followed by a nasty smell and an inability to put the car into any gear but neutral. Did I mention that we were going uphill?
Act of Kindness #1: A man stopped and helped us push it safely to the guardrail, much to my nervous nellie relief.
I have never gotten stuck on the side of the road in an unknown place before. We scratched our head for a while, trying to figure out who to call (we lacked AAA and it was not our car).

It turns out that there are not that many tow companies open on Sunday. It also turns out that we had a very vague idea of where the heck we were (Yeah, we are on 9W near some red leaves does not really cut it).
Act of kindness #2: Within about ten minutes of standing stranded on the side of the road making cell phone calls, two guys pulled over and used their GPS system to help us pinpoint where exactly we were on 9W. Swank.
After we got the car to the auto body shop, A and I realized that we had no idea how to get home. My usual reptilian circulatory system led us to the closest Dunkin Donuts for hot coffee and some time to sit and hash out a plan. We wound up investigating the bus stop, conveniently located in front of the local gas station.

The attendant and a couple buying coffee explained there was a bus that would take us to the Port Authority...due in two hours. The couple left the gas station. We mulled it over, trying to figure out whether to wait or get a car to take us to Beacon/MetroNorth.
Act of Kindness #3: Then the husband poked his head into the station and offered to drive us to Beacon.
Guess what we chose? With Fifty Cent blasting through a bitchin' bass tube half the way there (his wife turned it down)? But you know what? We got to Beacon, and that couple rocks.

Is that the whole story? Cuz I see three things: a smashed up sign, a dented fender and a missing hubcap.
Glad no one got run down by other foliage drivers.

sorry, i should have been more clear. no accident. that's the way the car looked prior to our borrowing it. i actually found the sign on the side of the road where we broke down, which we thought was pretty ironic...and why i stole it.

By the way...
We were only about seven miles from the art center itself, when the trouble began.
The auto garage we were towed to was about a MILE away. I was still tempted to go once we dumped the car, but Corie was turning blue and we did have the prickly problem of how the get back to NYC.
And if you are going to be stuck on the side of the road for a while, you can't beat having Corie as your companion.

yeah, if we had known how to get home and hadn't been offered a ride so quickly to the whump-thumpin beat of "problem child," i totally would have been game to go to the art center. i wasn't THAT cold!

Well, hell, you could've gone to the DIA before taking the train back down...

that idea way toyed with...but it was getting closer to dark and i was...um...COLD.

Hmm, replace "clutch" with "tire" and "cold" with "knee" and these stories sound pretty familiar...
Long Day's Journey Home
You have nicer pictures though...
