Green-Wood

Green-Wood Cemetery, Brooklyn
On Saturday, A and I checked out Green-Wood Cemetery as part of the Open House NY festivities. The cemetery's design served as a model for both Central and Prospect Parks-- and I must admit that I couldn't help but think of Smith College's campus as we walked around (Prospect Park, Central Park, and Smith's grounds were all designed by Olmstead).
One of the most striking things about Greenwood is the varied degree of care given to the gravesites and mausoleums. It made me wonder if some of the decrepit "perpetual care" crypts and stones were no longer tended to because there was no more lineage/family left. Regardless, the cemetery is beautiful in its own right.

when those little lamb statues get worn down, they look really freaky.

Hey, I was there, too. Beautiful place. I excepted more of the catacombs, though.

Yeah, it was hard to tell what was open and what wasn't. I felt a little creeped out after a while, though. I don't think I'll be going back any time soon.
