A27 Critical Mass; Part II

Press
It's extremely important that we pay attention to the press these days.

100 Cyclists Are Arrested as Thousands Ride in Protest; The New York Times, August 28, 2004.

Cops Bust Bike Protest; New York Daily News, August 28, 2004.

NYC Police Arrest 250 in Bicycle Protest; NY Newsday, August 28, 2004.

Do you mean because it is an extreme sport? I really don't understand why it is important at all, the press has made quite apparent what they intend to portray as this weeks news for past few months. Is it really necessary to tune in just to make sure they deliver? Personally I'd rather eat a roast beef sandwich and play croquet. Good luck with your organized disorganization :)

did you end up taking part in the ride? though i don't necessarily agree with how critical mass goes about "protesting" as they have no plan for the rides, it probably would've been interesting for to be on this particular ride given the timing with the rnc and all. it's gonna be a very politically charged week in new york.

Beautiful photos.

Anyone want to guess the over/under for the number of plastic flex-cuffs the police will use during the week?

Some witnesses said the arrests in the Village began when someone tossed some spaghetti at a cop.

Well, that's not very bright.

kevin, i'm not quite sure what you are talking about.

And yes, tossing spaghetti, or anything, at a cop (or anyone) is not bright.

The flexi-cuffs are everywhere. It's quite interesting. The arrests that I took photographs of were the result, I'm pretty sure, of people not moving out of the street when ordered to (or move somewhere-- it all went very quickly).

as usually, I don't really mean anything. your extreme italicization regarding the press stood out to me so i had to comment on it. sorry :(

oh, okay, i getcha. i thought you were talking about the critical mass in general :) to me, keeping watch over what is reported, particularly after attending an event, is really important. no, they never deliver. it's pretty depressing.

i didn't ride in the critical mass-- i went to observe and followed them up from union square to almost 42nd and then back down again. it was a really amazing spectacle, though i agree that the technique's message tends to get a little lost. i think, in the end, it was a message of solidarity.

i'd like to ride at some point. maybe when things calm a little. i think i've got some legs under me now, but i still worry about crashing into some people.

I'm in your third photo, under arrest! Could you send me a full-size version, if you don't mind? More here: http://www.satanslaundromat.com/sl/archives/000386.html
