Dippin Whats?

Ah, yet another post that, when read over, reminds me that I am getting old.

While at a Cincinnati Reds game this May, I witnessed a gaggle of pre-teen girls consuming what is perhaps one of the grossest “dessert” substances I have ever seen. There’s only one comparison that I have been able to draw: gray, wet kitty litter. Or perhaps wet, faded, purple nerds (the candy, not Arvid after a rainstorm).

I was completely perplexed—and perhaps staring too much. The small ice cream sundae cup that held this disgusting concoction read Dippin’ Dots. Was this a Midwestern thing? Or simply a pre-teen fad that, in my travels through adulthood, I completely missed? Whatever the explanation, I left the stadium intent of figuring this candy conundrum out.

Of course, I promptly forgot.

Then, while reading David Brooks’ new book, Paradise Road, I came across Dippin’ Dots once more (I find it very odd that I would read about Dippin’ Dots in a Brooks’ piece, but I guess it had to do with suburbia and trends). Well, I thought to myself, if David Brooks knows about Dippin’ Dots, then I have some catching up to do.

Well, it turns out that Dippin’ Dots are “the ice cream of the future.” They are billed as the coldest ice cream on the market—super cold little pellets that are eaten with a spoon out of a plastic cup. And get this: they are cryogenically frozen. Fifteen years ago, a microbiologist developed the dessert by creating a process to flash freeze ice cream into little beads. The company has recently buddied up with McDonalds.

But not our McDonalds. At least, not the two I slipped into recently on my quest for Dippin’ Dots. In fact, from what I could tell from the Dippin’ Dots website, they are not readily available in NYC, which I find hard to believe, as Times Square is best known for its abundance of useless crap all housed in a four or five block radius.

Perhaps I haven’t looked hard enough (no, I haven’t actually set foot in Times Square to find them). Dippin’ Dots allows you to order them directly from their site, however I’m holding out until my office installs a vending machine.

Oh, you're soooo unhip. Dippin' Dots have been out for years! The Mall at the Source in Westbury has had a stand since it opened...see how completely you've disavowed your Long Island roots!
;-)

I can vouch that Seaside Heights has "the ice cream of the future" as well. It wasn't quite interesting enough to take a picture of, though I hope it tasted better than the soft ice cream I did try.

yep, dippin dots are all over the place.

Posted by: tien at July 14, 2004 9:05 AM

But do they taste good? I was hoping that I would find them in airport food courts, but no such luck. Where can I get them in Manhattan? I need to take a field trip.

I must have lost my Long Island nose for these things! To think that I was just back at my old haunt and didn't take a detour to the Smithaven Mall...I bet they had them there.

You can get them at Yankee Stadium or at Shea. Occasionally, I have seen their vending machines around, but, alas, I do not remember where I saw them. They actually taste pretty good. The little frozen pellets create a unique sensation. I wish I came up with the idea -- Apparently they was invented by some chemist (searching for slow melting ice cream) who is now a gazillionaire.

they definately had them at the SI Yankees stadium, and I think maybe the Cyclones stadium as well. And I distinctly remember them being present at Woodbury Commons, oh, say 8 years ago?

For the ice cream of the future, they're certainly taking a while to catch on.

Just follow the link for Dippin' Dots; they have their own link to help you locate some good ol' dippin' dots in the NYC area. Or you can open your own franchise!

And don't feel so old.

You see Dipping Dots stands in malls all over the place...it's a mall phenom...which is why we never see it in the city. And Manhattan Mall is sort of like the "mall of the dead" as far as store choice goes!

imagine, i have known about dippin dots forever, and sadly we were talking about them this weekend after going to see the baseball installation at the smithsonian. it may as well have been an infomercial. they used to sell them in malls, out of carts much like ice cream carts, umbrella and all. they were always called the ice cream of the future, and reminded me of tang. now they are in vending machines to be mixed based on what kind of experience you want, much like the jelly belly concoctions you eat. which i know you eat calla.

don't feel old, feel like you are catching up to me, your older friend.

Dipping Dots have been in my hometown (in Mississippi) since at least 1992. They let you sample it before you buy it. As a result, I've never bought any.

ha! someone just told me that they taste like ice pellets. i still want to try them. i'll have to trek over to times square...something tells me that they must have a store near sanrio or one of those other too-cute-for-words crapola stores.

Posted by: corie at July 14, 2004 11:02 AM

They have (or did the last time I was there) a dipping dots vending machine at the movie theater in Union Square (what used to be Loews but is now "Regal" or something like that. The one right by Virgin and Circuit City). People were lining up in front of that thing. Of course, you have to buy a movie ticket to get in...and I really can't believe they don't sell them somewhere else in the city besides baseball stadiums.

no dipping dots at shea. at shea, they only have carvel. maybe some baskin robbins action too.

i think they have them in the bronx though.

Posted by: tien at July 14, 2004 12:15 PM

that's because the mets suck.

Posted by: corie at July 14, 2004 12:26 PM

They have them at the Coliseum in Oakland. They're nasty as fuck.

Posted by: Mike at July 14, 2004 1:09 PM

Taste them? Why would anyone do that? They look like Kitty Litter...oh, wait, someone said that already. Ah well, all great thoughts are derivative anyway.

Posted by: Jerry at July 14, 2004 1:59 PM

hmm...if the mets suck and they swept the yankees and won the season series, what does that make the yankees? suckers?

Posted by: tien at July 14, 2004 2:16 PM

tien, honestly...we all know that the mets are almost as lame as the red socks. they need a little triumph once in a while, like when you let a little kid win at checkers because you're tired of watching his ass get whipped on each game. the yankees losing just adds spice to things. it gets boring when they win all of the time. and it makes it all the more interesting to watch the mets fall on their face at the end of things, which they always do.

jerry-- i'm still curious, kitty litter or no. i think it's because they look like my favorite candy, nerds.

Posted by: corie at July 14, 2004 2:47 PM

corie, just prepare yourself for october when your $180 million plus salary wins you jack shit.

i'm almost surprised you're a yankee fan. being a yankee fan is like being a ... republican!

Posted by: tien at July 14, 2004 2:49 PM

ACK! i am mortally wounded. take that back!

actually, i've always associated the mets with republicans, probably because my conservative side of the family routes for them.

wait. are dippin dots served cold? i get that they're flash frozen but are they like freeze dried or something? are what pray tell are we supposed to be dipping into them? shrimp? munchos?

Posted by: ChrisG at July 14, 2004 3:56 PM

that's what confused me. you don't dip them at all. they're just super cold ice cream pellets.

Posted by: corie at July 14, 2004 4:19 PM

i don't think they are readily available in major metropolitan areas.... i've honestly only seen them in suburban malls.

Posted by: nicole at July 15, 2004 1:21 AM

Have no fear about venturing to a stadium or suburban mall for some Dippin' Dotz. I just saw a bus ad on the way home, with Dippin' Dots to be available at a Mickey D's near you. At least in Seattle. Checked the paper and it looks like some Bay area and San Diego Mickey D's are also testing marketing them.

Now aren't you sad that dear old Dad didn't choose SD over Vermont?
