Bring Lactaid

Bring it on, cheesecake fans, bring it on! The Cheesecake Challenge is most definitely happening. Those participating should have gotten an evite reminder yesterday with my address, etc. Were at about 15 or so people, plus me and one portly feline.
Above is the prospective, very un-scientific breakdown of cheesecake, origin, and flavor. There's one thing that we do not need to debate-- there will not be a lack of cheesecake!
One thing, however, that needs further discussion is beverage. We contemplated this issue a few weeks ago, however no conclusion was met. As it stands right now, I'll offer guest the remaining beer in my fridge (warning: you might have brought it to my housewarming party...that's the rate that I drink beer at home) and whatever is lingering in the house (some good vodka, cheap whiskey and various other rarely touched spirits).
Long story short: tell me what you would like and I'll try to stock up (but no requests for $50 bottles, please...I don't love any of you that much).

ack, i still have to find a decent bakery in my neighborhood! but nobody is getting one from Juniors? somebody *has* to! furthermore to your whiskey, how much and how cheap?
Posted by: Jimmy Legs at April 14, 2004 10:28 AM
I'll bring some tasty Rheingold beer.
Posted by: josé at April 14, 2004 10:39 AM
no chocolate cheesecake!?!?

I just did a search for cheesecake tasting criteria and found some quirky cheesecakes (eg, 7-UP/Lemon with Strawberry glaze cake). Now, why didn't someone get interesting a pull of a stunt like that?
Posted by: josé at April 14, 2004 11:04 AM
the junior's phenomenon is interesting...
as for whiskey (did i mention that i don't know my ass from my elbow when it comes to whiskey?)...maybe it's jameson's? i'm not sure. i don't think it's opened, either. i'll check when i get home.
Posted by: corie at April 14, 2004 11:05 AM
my evite must have gotten lost in the mail. Corie did mention server problems. >:)
I would suggest a milk or cream based libation for all that cheesecake eating. kahlua and creme, white russian, and other dessert/cordial type stuff.
but don't worry about the evite. I likely can't make it because I'm too cool and too far.

Hmm:
Cream or sweet stout, imperial stout. These are made for chocolate, and imperial stout pairs especially well with dark chocolate. Also try chocolate-and-fruit desserts, such as stout cheesecake with raspberry sauce, or something with caramel or pecans
or
Wine: for chocolate and/or raspberry cheesecake, try pairing with a Carmenere (whatever that is)
or
Blueberry cheesecake: Muscat de Rivesaltes
or
... Vintage Port & cheesecake
Too many choices....
Jay, sorry, no evite...I only invited people that I knew would be able to come. That whole Midwest/NYC thing, well, you know. But if you want to hightail it over, please do so :P

bwha? jamesons is not only *not* cheap, it kicks my ass! i love it. although it may be a bit too sweet to go with the cheesecake (irish whiskey is generally sweeter than other types). but then, if we just put it in coffee it'll be swell.
Posted by: Jimmy Legs at April 14, 2004 11:34 AM
Yum! Looks like a pretty comprehensive cheesecake list. Wish I could make it but I'm traveling this weekend. :(
Posted by: Alaina at April 14, 2004 12:12 PM
okay, there is no juniors because we all know it's garbage. that said, i think someone should bring it so it can be put to shame.
and it looks like there is a lot of plain going on, so i can change my cheesecake to plain, if necessary.
Posted by: tien at April 14, 2004 12:26 PM
hmm. i'll have to open up the jameson's and try it. my goal this summer is to gain an appreciation for all things whiskey. so far it's not going too well.
Posted by: corie at April 14, 2004 1:15 PM
for all things whiskey, begin desensitizing your palatte with Old fashions and Manhattens. Then slowly move on to whiskey and water, and whiskey on the rocks with a water back before going whiskey straight up. It's not for the faint of heart or those who wish to retain a hairless chest.

Again, I highly recommend NOT using strong dark beers to cleanse the palate. Because they simply won't.
Pollute the palate, yes. And in a good way. But cleanse it? Nyet! I'm sticking with coffee, improved or plain, as my recommendation. Regular beer would probably wipe the slates clean as well.

can't we just drink water and booze afterwards?
Posted by: tien at April 14, 2004 2:00 PM
Dude, you can drink whatever you'd like. I'll mke sure there's some water just for you :)
Posted by: corie at April 14, 2004 2:20 PM
really? well, i mean, if there are other options, i might have to give them a try. i won't rule out water though.
Posted by: tien at April 14, 2004 2:23 PM
what kind of water? sparkling, bottled, tap? flavored? mineral?
JUST KIDDING.
Posted by: corie at April 14, 2004 2:27 PM
mmm...pineaplle cheesecake.
Posted by: josé at April 14, 2004 3:53 PM
jimmylegs: does that french gourmet shop around the corner from Tillie's do baked goods?
Peaches and Cream, the ice cream place on Myrtle, (near citibank/Clinton St.) does cakes and pies...though cheesecake I'm not sure about.
Posted by: abby at April 14, 2004 5:41 PM
If I did my math right, I will be making two small cheesecakes. One will be as listed. The other will be an experiment. You'll know if the experiment succeeds if I bring two cakes, one with a slice missing.
I like Junior's cheesecake.
Will there be an evaluation form so we can rate each cake? Did I just volunteer to make one?
Posted by: joe s at April 14, 2004 11:27 PM
i will never refuse juniors cheesecake.
and i'm happy to report that i will be picking up a cheesecake from the world-reknowned Cake Man on Fulton on Ft Greene. abby, i totally forgot about the epicerie, we'll have to wait for the next cheesecake party. hmmm.
Posted by: Jimmy Legs at April 15, 2004 1:04 AM
hmm...i have no current plan for designing an evaluation sheet...but i think that you should go for it, joe, if you'd like! i get the feeling that this might be a cheesecake free-for-all after a while.
Posted by: corie at April 15, 2004 6:43 AM
there needs to be some numbering system, no? so we don't know which cake is actually which store?
Posted by: tien at April 15, 2004 7:51 AM
Hmm. We could just putlittle labels next to the cake...though it would be up to the eater to keep track of what slice came from what. I'll think about it and maybe bring it up at my research & policy staff meeting today :P
Posted by: corie at April 15, 2004 8:04 AM
tien, you may prefer eileens over juniors, but juniors isnt "crap". I've seen you eat it. and remember that huge slice i had w/ the chocolate mousse? ... oh.. man...l.
Posted by: rachelle at April 15, 2004 8:18 AM
ok, i'll bring juniors, and still try to get to monteleone's since it sounds yummy from the nytimes article. but its way easy for me to stop by juniors, so i'll try to do both, since i'm bringing sam afterall.
Posted by: dahl at April 15, 2004 8:46 AM
actually rachelle, i didn't eat any juniors that night. i might have had a bite, but that's it. so you probably haven't seen me really eat juniors and reach for a glass of water with every bite.
Posted by: tien at April 15, 2004 9:05 AM
this party is starting to sound like the cheesecake equivalent of that nathan's hot dog eating contest. i saw a documentary about it, it was one of the most repulsive things i've seen in a long time. i'm betting none of us will want to touch a cheesecake for a while after this :)
Posted by: Jimmy Legs at April 15, 2004 12:31 PM
did i mention the #1 rule of this event?
no on is allowed to puke in my apartment. so take into account how much dairy you can consume, as well as alcohol, and balance it...I live in an old apartment with sensitive plumbing!
Posted by: corie at April 15, 2004 12:41 PM
sounds like so much fun. i wish i could be there.
i know that this beverage doesn't sound fun at all (and it isn't), but you may want to drink seltzer in between, so you can clean your palate in between tastes. i suppose you could flavor it with vodka, but i would suggest, a plain one at that, nothing that will alter the taste of the cheesecake testing. of course, if it is all about the getting drunk and eating cheesecake, well then i suggest the liquors. they will alter the taste of the cheesecake, but will taste yummy.
enjoy, and have fun. miss you all
