Park West High School; West 50th Street, NYC
Park West High School is a large concrete and brick structure located on West 50th Street. It is a casualty of late-1970's architecture. Such large, rather windowless (at least on the first floor) buildings depress me greatly, especially when it's students who spend the majority of time within them.
Park West has a gigantic professional kitchen just off of its main lobby and the school on a whole has a strong emphasis on career training, offering students preparation for college and/or entry level employment in aviation technology, culinary arts, or vertical transportation. It is currently in its first year of phase-out.
Beginning in September 2004, Park West will house the 9th grade classes for Food and Finance High School, High School for Hospitality Management, and The Urban Assembly High School of Design and Construction.

at least their building is nice on the outside - my high school was fondly known as the brick prison. who ever thought of converting an armory into a high school was a sick, sick person.
aviation technology and culinary arts seem like an odd combination.

actually, that's just one tiny corner of the outside. the rest is imposing and ugly. i didn't include the photos that i took of all of the police outside, either-- which i'm hoping was primarily because the mayor was there. then again, we went through airline security to get inside, which is a daily occurance at most large high schools.

Great photo! I thought it was a painting when I first looked at it.

The light was so pretty yesterday. It felt great after being stuck in an airless, windowless auditorium for 3 hours.
