A Thousand A Day

Well isn't this a tad bit disturbing (paragraphs taken from larger article):

In a bold effort to protect his budget–perhaps even increase it– Morgenthau let slip that the NYPD plans to arrest up to 1000 street protestors a day during this summer’s Republican National Convention...

Planning security for such an event is one thing, and is to be expected. But to have someone like Morgenthau or Ray Kelly come out and say, essentially, that they intend to arrest 1000 people a day because they don’t like the Republican party? That goes way beyond taking steps to "protect us" from "terrorists." [via The New York Press]

Thats the estimate of the number of people they expect to possibly have to arrest. They're not going to go around and count to 1,000.

I'm fully aware of that. Though I wouldn't put it past them.

Actually, I'm surprised that they are estimating arrest number that low. I expect that there will be many, many thousands of people in the street during the the Republican convention, the vast bulk very pissed off people.

Don't look the those numbers with disgust, look at them as a barometer of the discontent that the Republicans will have to deal with while trying to put a happy face on some very ugly realities.

In some ways, it feels kind of like a scare tactic, though I think the "leak" will rile more people up than frighten people off from protesting.

We were joking in the office yesterday about starting a "Bail Bond Phone List."

I find it interesting that they are estimating so high, actually. The tactic used in Seattle during WTO was to gas, concussion grenade and otherwise attack people while keeping the arrest rate low. Kudos to the Seattle Fire Department, who refused to allow them to use the hydrants to firehose demonstrators. Will NYFD do the same?

Yeah, but in Seattle they were trying not to arrest people in order to keep costs down. If your goal is to increase costs and claim you need a bigger budget, it makes sense to arrest as many people as possible. It's hard to tell which is more disturbing, actually...
