What I Did on My Winter Vacation

San Diego was definitely a needed break from the normal fast-paced world of NYC. On my way there, I'd been a little nervous. I seem to have a permanent association of last-minute trips to SD with my travels immediately after 9/11 (I must have visited Gianna about three times between October and December '01). I have weird, confused memories of airplanes, time changes, and layovers, all wrapped in a malaise of fear, sadness, and an instinctual urge to change my environment. Regardless, things wound up going just fine.

I lucked out on the weather and spent a good part of my five day stay splayed out on Abby, Taylor, and Lauren's front porch soaking in the sun. I even managed to stay away from email, though I wasn't able to wean myself from reading the NYTimes each morning.

I like Southern CA a lot, though I don't think that I'd ever visit if it weren't for Gianna living there. I love slowing down my pace a bit, but after a couple of days, I find myself yearning for the city again. Sure, it's dark, dirty, and cold...but it's also my city, and there's something about Brooklyn that makes me smile just thinking about it, even when I'm trapped in an airplane at 1am with two screaming babies and a pack of teenagers sitting behind me from Nassau County on their way back from Cancun.

Abby gets down and dirty.

Abby, Taylor, and Lauren moved into their new house the day after I arrived. Abby was very excited to learn that you could clean lamp shades with a vacuum cleaner.

What do you do once all of the lamp shades have been vacuumed? Put crocheted hats on the cats, of course.

And what do you do when Maud(e) is an outdoor cat that must be sequestered inside for a day or two, yet has a bad habit of peeing all over the house? Buy kitty training pants, of course.

Love the series! We had a great time with you. Next time we won't make you move...but we will still be cleaning the lampshades.
Maud is still under the bed -- though we did have to get him from the old house this morning. Will he ever get it?
Glad to hear you're home safe.
Love, Abby and Tay

okay i wanna know how long that cat kept those pants on. my cat won't wear her cape for more than a couple minutes before she rips it off and leaves it under the couch.

Did you let Maud out in his diaper? That would have been rad. Actually, they kind of look like tight board shorts.

Which cat has a cape, JL? I want one of the crochet hats for Irving.

Decatur occasionally becomes a superhero. none of the other cats would even let me get close with the cape.

I need a Captain Decatur picture, please.
