KINDER SURPRISE

egg.jpgKinder Surprise eggs rock my world. Jiemonster brought them to my attention several months ago, and ever since then I've been keeping an eye out for the cute German treats everywhere I go.

Kinder Surprise eggs are made of two thin layers of chocolate-- one white and one milk-- and inside contain a little plastic capsule with a toy. Sometimes you get a lame dud, such as a puzzle, but most of the time you get a tiny little toy that needs to be assembled. Apparently, some of them are made of wood, though I've never gotten one like that.

There are about five categories of toys (there is an amazing collector's niche for Kinder eggs...it's a little weird); I like transportation and monsters the best, as they require the most assembly. The 2004 line of toys include, of all things, Smurfs (!)

The Canadian Kinder Surprise site (linked above) has a boutique that sells the coolest hat ever. I was going to buy it, however it seems like you can't order it anymore. Maybe I need to hit eBay.

Related/Of Interest: Kinder Surprise Star Wars Hippos.

that is a cool hat. i'm big into orange, but can't say that i have an orange hat myself. where does it say you can't buy it anymore. it seems like you have to ... oh, just read the fine print. you should call them and see if they will still sell you one.

omg, kinder suprise is my favorite candy of all time! i used to eat about one a day when i lived in england. someday, i'll have to show the huge toy collection, of which my favorites were the green alien caracters.

kinder eggs rock. i've been into them since '96 when i was entrenched in europe. they sell multipacks there and i brought back a case of them. yummy and fun. i want some smurfs and star wars hippos, too.

i think i heard something about those not allowed to be sold in the US b/c the small parts pose a choking hazard to children? can anyone confirm this?

kinder eggs' fun little toys kind of ease the pain of the sucky US cracker jack toys

i'll have to get in touch with the canadian company about the hat. i was having trouble with their flash site yesterday and suddenly the "boutique" wasn't showing up anymore...

as for the kinderegg import issue, yes, jeannette, i read about that, too. i think that's why jiemonster and i have been getting figurines lately instead of fun toys. booo. kids choking. meh.

I brought Thomas some Kindereggs home from Dubai...he got two jellyfish figures and a piranha that opens and closes it's mouth when you move the fins. Pretty damn good quality toys compared to the toy-in-plastic-egg variety we get in the U.S.

they're really fun. i think jiemonster needs to import some more from the bronx.

jeannette - are these the things you bought us in europe last year? i remember having a lot of fun putting them together at work!!! so much so that for a while the chocolate was neglected.. can you imagine that? me neglecting chocolate!?!?

the bronx is not the other side of the world you know! i think people should hike up here and get their own - i've received enough quizzical looks from the lady wondering what i'm doing with so many eggs.
