Idiotarod...MUSH!!
The Iditarod is the famous long-distance race in which yelping dogs tow a sled across Alaska. Our Idiotarod is pretty much the same thing, except that instead of dogs, it's people, instead of sleds, it's shopping carts, and instead of Alaska it's New York City. The race begins at Pedro's in Dumbo, Brooklyn, and finishes at Union Square in Manhattan. Teams of five will compete for cash prizes and a box of fireworks. We expect teams in costumes, hot-rod shopping carts, and all sorts of ancillary mayhem. We think it will be extraordinarily silly. Everyone is invited to race.[Original Idiotarod info site]
And silly it was. Very silly. So silly that it was worth standing out in the freezing cold to cheer the teams across the Manhattan Bridge and all around Chinatown.
Check out some scenes from the 2004 Idiotarod. Sean and I followed the race from start (DUMBO) to finish (Union Square) in his embarrassingly cute Barbie convertible car. I never thought a convertible would be so convenient in freezing weather. It was fun, fun, fun.

I thought of you, JL, and wondered if you were going to be there. There were some people on these reallyl cool bikes. Let me see if I can find a picture.
