SELF CONTROL

whiskers.jpgThere are two types of stores that I either need to completely avoid or summon up extreme self control. The first is the office supply store, where I could spend an unprecedented amount of time (and money) browsing various types of pens and paper. I've worked hard on curbing this obsession in the past few years and have for the most part succeeded in reining myself in.

The second type of store is home organization. In this sense, the arrival of The Container Store on Sixth Avenue and 19th Street has become the major test of my self control. I avoided going into the store for several months, however yesterday, in an attempt to find the perfect container for some one's holiday gift, I caved.

I should not be allowed to enter these stores with any form of money in my pocket. There's something about storage and organization that brings out the worst (or best, depending on how you see it) in me. Luckily, the Container Store is far enough away from my apartment that I cannot purchase large items. Thank goodness.

I'm proud of myself. I only spent $18. The original container goal was met, though I did walk away with several other non-essential containers, such as tiny glass spice jars and slightly larger ones for my loose tea. But the shining achievement was my discovery of the long, thin specimen jars-- perfect in size for my whisker collection.

Yes, I have a whisker collection. Get over it. It's gotten to the point that people find whiskers and save them for me. Now that's friendship.

a wisker collection? is that of irving's wiskers, or any cat or animal?

i went to college with some one who did that...and stored other bodily fluids, as well. i was always glad that she was never my rommate.

other bodily fluids? like her own? because i can't count that many that a woman could have...maybe i'm just not thinking hard enough.

Do you remember that art/office supply store that was in downtown PJ when we were kids? I always loved going in there with pops to look at pens and containers (he shares your love). As we moved into the Office Max age, I forgot how warm and fuzzy rows of colored card stock can make you feel. Then, the other night I visited a cute place on 20th, 21st, or 22nd and Ave. of Americas. Faith, ye have been restorethed.

I have about four feet of Metrocards. That was one year's worth, and that's enough.
